Upcoming road, park closures announced
By Patty Montagno

Motorists can expect traffic delays in the com-
ing months as the city is announcing some road
closures.
Some of the closures are due to street widen-
ing and park projects, the construction of the
Eastern Extension of the President George Bush
Tollway and the widening of Hwy. 78.
Equipment will be crossing at the PGBT
Eastern Extension and Old Miles Road from 9
a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on weekdays and if necessary
from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays.
The city has announced the immediate closure
of Old Miles Road between Bunker Hill Road
and Miles Road due to road conditions.
"This closure will last indefinitely," City
Engineer Billy George said. "Drivers are encour-
aged to find an alternate route. We apologize for
any inconvenience this ma y cause and appreci-
ate your patience as we work to improve our
infrastructure."
Officials said motorists traveling from PGBT
to Hwy. 78 north and southbound should use the
same exit ramp.
All eastbound PGBT traffic going north or
south onto Hwy. 78 is now using the same exit
ramp.
Northbound traffic will continue to utilize the
existing loop ramp. Southbound traffic now uti-
lizes temporary asphalt pavement to turn left
onto Hwy. 78 at an intersection where a tempo-
rary signal has been installed.

The city has clarified development
standards of its 2008 ordinance
regarding the use of wind generators.
According to the California Energy
Commission, a wind turbine is a
machine that converts the kinetic
energy in wind into mechanical ener-
gy-
The city has approved special use
permits for five wind turbines on
three properties since 2008. Two of
those wind turbines have been
installed.
"As part of the city's green build-
ing program, staff worked with the
city council during various work
shops to create a special section of
the Zoning Ordinance to clarify
development standards for wind gen-
erators," Community Development
Director Barry Shelton said. "The
proposed ordinance amendment clar-
ifies under what circumstances a
wind generator installation would be
allowed by right."
Shelton said after discussion the
the council came up with a compro-
mise regarding tower setbacks from
property lines and primary structures.
"A wind energy system must be
installed according to the manufac-
turer's recommendations and under
the seal of a profes-
sional engineer
registered in the
state," Shelton said
"Additionally, all compo-
nents of a system shall
comply with applicable
state and local building
codes. Only systems
utilizing monopole
towers shall be per-
mitted. No systems
utilizing lattice tow-
ers or requiring guy
wires shall be per-
mitted in the city."

The city of Sachse has been recog-
nized as a StormReady Community
by the National Weather Service.
National Weather Meteorologist
Mark Fox said the NWS initiated the
StormReady program as a way to
help cities implement procedures to
reduce the potential for disastrous,
weather-related consequences. The
designation lasts for three years.
"Sachse's StormReady recognition
was based on a number of criteria,
including the establishment of a
severe weather warning system and
maintaining an emergency operations
center, as well as having a system that
monitors local weather conditions,
promoting the significance of public
readiness through community semi-
nars and maintaining a formal haz-
ardous weather plan, which includes
holding occasional exercises and pro-
viding weather alert radios in city
buildings and fire stations," Fox said.
Emergency Management
Coordinator Robert Lafaye said the
StormReady declaration benefits the
community in a number of ways.
"It helps city leaders and emer-
gency managers strengthen local
safety programs," he said. "By being
StormReady, the community is better
prepared to help save lives during
severe weather as a result of better
planning, education and awareness. It
also helps improve the timeliness and
effectiveness of hazardous weather
warnings for the public."
During a presentation to the city
council, Fox said we live in the most
severe-weather-prone country on
earth.
"Some 90 percent of all presiden-
tially declared disasters are weather
related, leading to around 500 deaths
per year and close to $14 billion in
