The Dallas Rebels swept Atlanta, four games to none, in the 1946 Dixie Series. They were owned by the
flamboyant George Schepps (seated center in plain clothes).brought Dave Hoskins, an African American pitcher,
to Dallas in 1952. The move was both a courageous
social step and a way to boost attendance.
The Eagles were successful in the 1950s.
Dallas finished the regular season in first place in
1952, '53, '55, and '57 (with a tremendous 102 - 52
record) and won the pennant in 1953. The Eagles of
1955 featured future major league star and current
National League President Bill White. That team
was led in pitching by a tall, 34-year old righthander,
Red Murff, who won 27 against 11 losses. Murff
would later become known as the scout who "discovered"
and signed Nolan Ryan, the pitcher who would
become the major league's all time strikeout and nohit
king.Dallas won its last regular season Texas
League crown in 1957. A talented team which
featured outstanding pitching and solid hitting,
theEagles lost to Houston in the league championship
series, four games to three. Future major
leaguers Murray Wall, Ernie Broglio, and Art
Fowler (who would also become one of baseball's
most influential pitching coaches) led the pitching
staff. Also on the team was 19-year old first baseman
Willie McCovey. Two years later he would be
named National League Rookie of theYear for the
San Francisco Giants, and would go on to hit more
than 500 career home runs and be inducted to the
National Baseball Hall of Fame. Of all the glories
