Science Place), and sponsored
drives to combat tuberculosis,
polio, cancer,
and rheumatic fever. By
the 1950s, with 800 members,
the Dallas auxiliary
was contributing over
64,000 hours of community
service each year. The
auxiliary started Future
Nurse Clubs in eight Dallas
high schools; by 1955
these clubs were responsible
for a sixty per cent
increase in enrollment in
the four area nursing
schools.
In 1957, the Dallas
County Medical Society
sponsored the first
health fair in the state of
Texas. Two years later,
when the American Medical
Association met in
Dallas, the Society hosted
another health fair, and 120 local doctors and their spouses staffed 100 booths at the Texas State Fair.
During the 1960s auxiliary volunteers assisted mentally retarded youths through a special care school.
Many hours were donated to the Wadley Blood Bank, while a county welfare committee provided clothing and
vitamins for needy children. The International Health Committee collected and sent medical supplies overseas
to underdeveloped countries.
The auxiliary's activities have continued to expand in recent decades. One of its most successful
projects has been Health Check, which began with sixty booths at Valley View Mall in 1984. Offering
medical information, technology, and screenings to people who might not otherwise have access to them, the
first Health Check attracted 50,000 people in one weekend. In 1992 the attendance reached 180,000.
Health education, health service, and philanthropy continue to head the agenda of the auxiliary,
recently re-named the Dallas County Medical Society Alliance. As one member has observed, "There is no
end to educating the public on health issues."30
