Hunters should know laws
Bow season opens Monday
Journal Staff Report
Archers planning to hunt during
Texas' archery-only hunting season
for deer and turkey Oct. 1-31 should
be aware of state archery regula-
tions.
Law enforcement officials of the
Texas Parks and Wildlife Depart-
ment said the longbow, which in-
cludes recurved and compound
bows, must be hand-held and hand-
drawn with no mechanical devices
built into or attached to the bow that
would allow the archer to lock the
bow at full or partial draw.
Also, no device to propel the ar-
row, is permitted other than energy
stored by the hand-drawn bow, and
the bow must have a minimum peak
draw weight of 40 pounds.
Arrows used in taking game
animals and game birds may not be
poisoned, drugged or explosive.
Beginning this year, arrows no lon-
ger have to bear the name and ad-
dress of the user.
When hunting turkey and any
game animal other than squirrels,
the arrow must be equipped with a
broadhead hunting point that
measures at least 7/a of an inch in
width upon impact and have a mini-
mum of two cutting edges. Also

The Queen City Lady Bulldogs
improved their district record to 4-2
and a chance to play for second
place this Tuesday, with come-from-
behind road win at DeKalb.
The Lady Bulldogs' win was an
interesting one.
DeKalb won the fjrst game 10-15,
but the Lady Bulldogs battled back
to win game two, 15-10.
In game three Inita Wiggins
served out. The entire game. One
server. Fifteen points. Queen City
won 15-0.
"I have never seen anything like
that," said Queen City Coach Melis-
sa Wells. "It was unbelievable."
But believing is something Queen
City can start doing if it gets past a
major obstacle on Tuesday. The
once-beaten Pleasant Grove Lady
Hawks come to town. PG stopped
Queen City in their first meeting.
In the win at DeKalb, Wells also
praised the play of Andrea Cooksey
and Shayla Andrews.
In junior varsity action, DeKalb
At Atlanta Tuesday

coln led the Lady Dawgs with 16
points and Amy Healan and
Charisse Collins also played well.

JV tournament beginning Saturday.

Co-sponsor
needed soon
for annual
buck contest
Journal Staff Report
The annual Big Buck contest
co-sponsored by the Journal
may be in jeopardy this year un-
less a co-sponsor or co-sponsors
are found.
In the past, Bogie's Sporting
Goods has co-sponsored the
contest with the Journal. The
store closed its doors this sum-
mer.
The co-sponsorship would be
ideal for businesses with an in-
terest in the sporting public and
which provides products or serv-
ices such as sporting goods,
archery or other hunting equip-
ment, or taxidermy.
With the archery season open-
ing Oct. 1, and the sound of gun-
fire in the woods not far behind,
the future of the Big Buck Con-
test will be decided in the next
several weeks.
The co-sponsorship involves
partial purchase of trophies
and/or prizes, and measuring
and recording of the bagged
bucks.
Anyone interested should con-
tact Sonny Long at 796-7133.
