Barnett, Hale Homes Winners
Of "Yard of Month" Contest
A bright, colorful yard on
Brookglen and a sprawling,
well-accented yard on Merritt
Road are this month's winners
in the fifth annual Green
Thumb Contest.
"The judges had their most
difficult time of this summer
selecting the winning yards.
They said there was a tre-
mendous increase over prev-
ious months of first-rate yards
in Sachse," said Diana Smith,
Citizens for a Progressive
Sachse project chairman.
The Green Thumb summer-
time contest is another an-
nual project of CPS. The
awards, presented by the
civic group, cite the City's
best-looking front yards.

egories: (1) those up to one
acre in size and (2) those one
acre and larger. "Traveling"
awards will be presented in
both categories during June,
July and August.

3710 Brookglen, are winners
in the under-an-acre cate-
gory, while Randy and

Chamber Hears Addresses
On Wastewater, Education
August winners in Sachse's "Yard of the Month" Contest in the under-an-acre category are,
left to right, Gregg >and Leigh Barnett, shown with Citizens for a Progressive Sachse members
Diana Smith and Jim Becker. The Barnetts live at 3710 Brookglen.
Wastewater treatment and
education were the two topics
presented by guest speakers
at Tuesday's monthly Sachse
Chamber of Commerce lunch-
eon at Park Lake Baptist
Church.
Lynn Norton, managing di-
rector of environmental serv-
ices and resources for the
City of Garland, addressed
the Chamber audience con-
cerning projected wastewater
treatment rates for the City of
Sachse from the present
through the year 2010.
Garland currently treats
Sachse's wastewater.
Brian Edwards, district man-
ager for Ashland Chemical,
briefed the crowd on a new
coalition formed between the
Garland, Rowlett and Sachse
business communities and the
Garland Independent School
District to improve student
achievement. The coalition
has been named the GISD
Business and Education
Scholastic Team (BEST).
In his presentation, Norton
explained when Garland's two
treatment plants, Duck Creek
and Rowlett Creek, are com-
bined into a single system in
about 1997, Sachse's rates
will significantly decrease.
The projection after that
unification of plants is
estimated to be $1.19 per
1,000 gallons of wastewater
treated, compared with about
$2.00 per 1,000 gallons
without the unification proc-
ess.
"We feel comfortable with
these projections because of
the stability we've shown over
the years," Norton said,
adding that by 2010 the Row-
lett Creek facility, with only
minor modifications, would
still ahve adequate capacity
for Garland, Rowlett and
Sachse.
Norton noted that the
sludge transfer line that will
physically link the Duck Creek
and the Rowlett Creek plants
should be completed by 1997,
thus unifying the Garland sys-
tem. He said the 11-mile,
10-inch high pressure pipe-
line should save "$1 million a
year in operating costs."
In discussing Garland's use
of the methane gas
by-product of wastewater
treatment to generate electric
power, he said Garland had
recently been awarded a $1.14
million grant to increase the
capacity of its present engine
generators.
With the increase in
capacity, he said Garland will
soon be generating more
