TURKEYS AM) C0TT0'.
A farmer In the uplands of Ten-
nessee packed three cranberry (cran-
berry burrels are smaller than flour
barrels) with dressed turkeys and
shipped them to Memphis. The three
were sold at wholesale for $130. There
were less than fifty birds in the lot and
none of them large.
If this farmer grew three hales of
cotton it took seven "to nine acres of
hill lands to make it The value of
the seed probably paid the rent on the
land leaving the cotton for the labor
of making and gathering it and inter
est on the money invested in tools
stock etc. He sold his cotton at $45
per bale. It brought him then about
what his turkeys did. The growing of
the cotton took weeks of labor and
time; the turkeys hustled for them-
selevs and ate bugs and worms which
would probably have damaged his cot
ton. Each of them at maturity found
ready cash sale.
Isn't there something in this show-
ing In favor of turkeys as against cot-
ton or in turkeys in combination with
cotton? And If a small barrel of tur-
keys with the feathers plucked. Is
worth $43.33 1-3 cotton is certainly
not high at $45 per bale. Exchange.

The production of petroleum in the
I'nlted States In 1908 according to a ; ceedeJ that of any other mineral pro
the gulf. The increases are attributed
to steady growth in Illinois and Cali
fornia.' though neither field showed
phenotnlnal development
The greatest gain in number of bar-
rels and In percentage of production
was in Illinois. During the last half
of 1907 the rate of oil production In
this state was more than twice as
groat as In the first half and this In-
crease continued throughout 190S so
that the record for the year shows a
gain of more than S.000000 barrels be-
yond the output of 1907 or fully 33
per cent.
In California the progress of the
Industry was marked by the increased
production consumption prices and
shipments; decreased stocks and ex-
tension of fields. The value of the oil
production ln California In 1907 ex-
tlon in Southern Louisiana was stead-
ily maintained.

was also done by lightning more than
100 tanks being struck and destroyed

In Kansas and Oklahoma unusual
activity was evident in the erection of
small refining plants many of them
for the purpose of taking off light pro-
