STRONG TALK OF L
Two Men in the Jail at That Place Are
Guarded Night and Day and Are
in Hie Death Cell.
Mrs. McDermott has returned from
San Angelo where she went" to visit
her mother. Mrs. Melton who is ill
there. While in the Concho city Mrs.
McDerinott was of material assistance
to the olllcers there in the unraveling
of the murder mystery surrounding
the death of the woman Katie Ryan
who -was murdered and thrown into
the river. . .
It seems "that an old Mexican Juan
Remus who had worked for Mrs. Me-
Dvrmolt for a period of nearly eight
years was the last per .on Keen with
the Ryan woman before she was mur-
dered. The Mexican was arrested and
placed in jail and although two other
arrests were made at the same time
and it was felt that the Mexican was
not guilty or the murder the officers
were unable to obtain a statement
from him.
It was known that the old Mexican
had much confidence in Mrs. McDer-
mott and the ollicers therefore re-
quested the Brownwood lady that she
try and obtain a statement from the
man. The old Spaniard immediately
told all he knew Of the affair and it is
said that he unfolded an interesting
story.
The ollicers will give out very little
for publication but it is said that the
murder of the woman was one of the
most brutal crimes in .the annals of
San Angelo criminalogy and that there
lias been considerable -talk of a lynching.

The little 9-year-old son of Jake
Ward had a very narrow escape from
being crushed to a horrible death be-
neath the wheels of a rapidly moving
locomotive Wednesday evening at the
Santa Fe crossing on Fisk street. 1 he
youth with another companion was
playing on the north-side of the rail-
road aud the two boys were chasing a
dog. The dog playfully ran across the
street and seeing a freight train ap
proaching attempted to cross the track
in front of the engine and reach the
homeward side of the track.
The little Ward boy attempted to
catch the dog and had not noticed the
annroach of the train. The other
youth was just behind thdPard boy
and when he .saw the .jnrine almost
upon them he grabbed the Ward boy
and nulled him off the track. The
engine .struck and killed the dog and
missed the youth by only a few inches.
It was a thrilling- escape and the boys
were badly frightened.

A Little Misleading.
Brownwood has discarded its city
rock crusher. The crusher was bought
about two years ago for the purposo
of crushing rock to be used on the
streets but it seems to have been a
failure. Exponent
The above from tho Comanche Ex
ponent is a little misleading but .per-
haps not intentional on the part of
that paper. The rock crusher was
discarded because it is slower -than
