Consolation in Smoking.
It has been said that a habitu-
al smoker gets more consolation
out of a good cigar than any
other one thing you might sug-
gest. To him it's as necessary
to smoke as it is for the other
fellow to eat. If you are going

A prominent visitor in the city
Tuesday said Brownwood seemed to
he a little short on crossings at street
corners. He was picking his way
across the particular business street
of the city at that particular time and
to preserve a fresh shine was doing
a stunt at jumping that rivaled Gwinn
Henry s work at the track meet. "It
appears to me" said he "that Brown
f wood's greatest need just now is het-
4 ter crossings at street corners. It
would not take any large sum to shape
up the crossings and make a path of
tlie crushed rock for people to walk
over. With the sidewalks you have
people could get along very well on
muddy days if it were not for these
miserable crossings." Just then he
missed connection on an extra long
jump and landed in the middle of a
mud hole then he suggested some
thing about darning the streets hut
that would never do because it would
cost as much to build crossings as it
would to buy boats.
Brooke Smith in conversation with
"Round About" yesterday said the cot-
ton market would be materially af-
fected when the merchants from the
South go to market to buy their goods.
He argues that merchants from e very-
section of the country not only In
Texas but throughout the South will
not buy as many goods by half as they
(have bought heretofore and conse
quently the demand for cotton will not
be so great as it has been therefore
there will necessarily be a slump in
the price. Mr. Smith figures that the
decreased consumption will more than
offset the two million shortage and his
advice to farmers is to sell if they
must turn loose their holdings before
mid-summer.

TARGET PRACTICE.
Howard Payne Military Company Does
a Fancy Stunt at Shooting.
The Howard Payne Military com-
pany was out yesterday afternoon for
target practice and the boys did some
good shooting. The following is the
score made by the individual mem-
bers of the company:
H. Stephens 16; Cloud 18; Hodge
19; Littlepage. 17; Henry 20; Dickson
20; Garnett 22; Weaver. 15; Butler
17; Grove. 19; Ward 16; William.s6;
Richmond ll; Talbot 15; Robnett.15;
H. H. Stephens. 22; Scott. 22.
It will he seen that three of the boys
have tied making 22 out of a possi-
ble 25.
The Bulletin understands that the
college military company has receiv-
ed what they -consider a challenge
from the Brownwood Guards for a
sham battle and it is more than like-
ly that such a battle will he pulled off
about San Jacinto day. The Brown-
wood Guards company is composed of
Confederate veterans and is company
C in the first regiment of Texas Con-
federate veterans: A sham battle be-
tween the tried and true men who
wore the gray and the college boys
would be worth the while to witness.
