Inoculation of Legumes
J3y Kov King, County Agent.
One way of classifying plant-
places them as either legumes < r
non-legumes.
It has been known since ancient
times that the plants that we now
term legumes—-peas, beans, alfalfa,
clovers, *vetches, and related plant!-
—enrich the soil, whereas a contin-
uous growth <tf non-legumes leads
to a more or less rapid decline in
soil productivity. Within the lust
century i'i has been learned that
the difference is mainly due to t he
maimer in which these two groups
of plant- obtain their nitrogen.
from the soil.
Leguminous plants are able t o
gather nitrogen from the air only
through a very small bacteria tl.at
cm Ik- so -n only through a power-
ful microscope. If this bacteria is
not pie "lit, the plant* must s<. euro
all its nitrogen from the soil.
The luoteria must be present in
the soil or on the seeH. If not
present iu the soil, it is man's ie
spon ibility to placeil there. This
aet is what we call inocul di m.
Inoculation can be accomplished
bv lending soil from a field that
