Not ranch standing ground seems
left for those communities whioh
are opposed to cotton nfills because
of the assertion that mills can iipt
be operated at a profit in this State,
Jus! another instance of the fal-
lacy iii such a statement comes from
Bcmhaiu in an item which appeared
in the Telegram last Sunday, It
sounds all the better, coining at a
time when many business institu-
tions and manufacturing establish-
ments are talking about retrench-
ment and curtailment.
The Bonliam cotton mill, instead
of curtailing is throwing on more
steam. The manager i'ound the mill
behind with its ordeis, and asked
the employes if they would be wilt-
ing to work until 9 o'clock at night
in order to help eaten up. The em-
ployes replied that they would work
kot only until 9 o'clock, but until
10 o'clock if necessary.
That is why they are running the
Jjonham cotton mill nights now.
There must be something in the cot-
ton mill business when it expands
at a time when other businesses are
contracting.
Supposing evefy city in Texas the
size of Bonham had a cotton mill
now. Supposing that all the un-
marketed cotton in the State wera
within easy reach of the mills which
could turn it into a finished product.
Can you imagirfe what conditions
in Texas would be. Suppose 'that
even business were being done on the
cheek plan. The fanner could sell
his cotton fo a mill, give the check
he got for it to the merchant in pay-
ment for at least part of the' mill's
products. The merchant could pay
the mill and the mill pay its em-
ployes. An endless chain of business
could be built up to run indepen-
entlv' of money marjket any-
ddu
..ft
factories of all kinds to use up all
kinds of farm products. It isn't
hard to imagine the result.
This is one of the reasons the
Telegram and many other papers of
the "Slate are always talking up small t
fact« nV. Make Texas finished £
products at home and buy no other $2
kind. When there is a surplus, ex- 99
jport; but feed and clothe Texas with
Texas products first. — Fort Worth CO
