PROGRESS BEING MADE ON
MOTOR EXPRESS SERVICE
House Bill 307, sponsored by
David Crews of Conroe, met
with what appeared to be or-
ganized resistance in the House
Motor Traffic Committee. After
several meetings, the committee
took no action, not even refer-
ring the bill to a sub-committee,
and it died.
In the Senate, the same bill,
Senate Bill 30, had better luck.
When the Senate Transportation
Committee failed to report on
the motor express legislation,
Senate sponsor Franklin Spears
made a motion in the Senate for
re-referral of the bill to another
committee. He explained before
the vote that the Senate would
FARM BRIEFS
By Brooks Smith
County Agricultural Agent
Thrips continue to damage
cotton ill the two to six leaf
stage. Cotton that has received
insecticide treatments has re-
sponded rapidly. Cotton which
is just emerging should be pro-
tected from thrips.
Cotton fleahoppers are causing
considerable damage to cotton
which is old enough to square.
As the wild host, such as Horse-
mint dries up, cotton fleahoppers
may continue to migrate into the
cotton flelds in large numbers.
Cotton should be examined very
closely and treated, if counts
"warrant for the next two weeks
in order to prevent fleahopper
damage.
A few bollworms and boll-
worm eggs are appearing in
some fields. These fields should
be examined closely and if the
infestation continues to increase,
control measures should be
appied. However, in past years
this generation has not caused
much damage.
A blue-green egg which has
been identified as the square
borer is appearing in cotton at
this time. Larvae of the square
borer are also appearing and
attacking squares. No control
has been necesesary so far.
Over-wintered weevils have
been found in some instances.
Cotton which is squaring should
be examined for the presence of
over-wintered weevils. It may
be necessary to use an insecti-
cide to control these over-
wintered weevils.

actually be voting for or against
the Motor Express program for
Texas. The vote was fifteen
against the motion, with ten for.
The rest abstained.
This vote indicated that there
is certainly support in the Sen-
ate for this legislation to provide
Texas with fast motor express
service. Possibly, an encouraging
vote might have been attained
in the House, too, had there
been any way to bring the
matter to the floor.
"Resistance to our bills, mainly
from the Texas Motor Transpor-
tation Association, the railroads
and the bus lines, was indeed
stiff," explained R. G. Dudley,
President of the Committee. "But
our progress is encouraging.
And, our people interested in
this legislation will be back next
session."
