The cold weather was the
main topic of conversation
out our way this past week.
Moat people stayed inside
except when their work
required them to be out and
about, but a few hardy
women did meet at Mary
Samson's for the Thursday
work session. We really
admire these women who
are always so faithful to
attend these sessions, and
are ever amazed at the
volumns of work they turn
out. Right now they are

distinguished honor.

REPORTER FOR THE
SAN ANTONIO LIGHT
Sandy Ervin is a person
who ropes cheerfully with
being in the hospital
"When I'm in the hospital,
I like to go up and down the
halls, visiting people, just
kidding around. And yester
day, I started to learn
Spanish," said the twelve-
year old Bastrop girl who is
no stranger to hospitals.
Sandy, whose joints are
frozen by rheumatoid arthri
tis. is the 1978 Poster Girl of
the South Central Texas
Chapter of the Arthritis
Foundation.
She's a patient at Wi'ford
Hall USAF Medical Center,
where she's expected to
remain for the next several
weeks undergoing occupa
tional therapy designed to
"improve activites of daily
living." according to her
physician, Lt. Col. Charles
M. Singleton. chief of
rheumatology services.
Next week, doctors will
confer about surgery for the
youthful arthritis victim who
has also undergone treat
ment in Austin and Houston.
Sandy was accompanied to
San Antonio by her grand
mother, Mrs. Lola Ervin,
with whom she lives.
"She'll have a long stay
this time," Mrs. Ervin said.
"I'll stay for the surgery, but
then I'll go back to Bastrop
and I'm sure going to be
lonesome."
Singleton said the therapy
planned for the girl should
improve her ability to handle
daily activities which other
persons take for granted.
"Right now. she has
trouble eating or combing
her hair." Singleton said.
"We'll have to see what
joints we can get moving.
She's been sitting (in the
wheelchair) for a long time."
Singleton said therapists
can teach arthritis suffers
"new ways of doing things."
Joints, he said, must be
moved in ways that help
rather than harm them.
"We will definitely do
some surgery . . . release"

tendons and that sort of
thing," Singleton said of
Sandy's treatment.
Treatment for adult
arthritis victims, such as
artificaI joints, is not usually
used for children, the doctor
said.
"It is unknown how long
they (artificial joints) will
last. Not that they are weak,
but we don't put them in
children."
It is fortunate for her
family that Sandy is eligible
for treatment at Wilford
Hall. Her father, Master Sgt.
Charles Ervin, is stationed in
Germany.
"It would cost thousands
of dollars in a private
hospital," said Marguerite
Lasley, secretary of the area
chapter of the Arthritis
Foundation.

The cold weather has
made it bad for even the
'hardy' ones but despite all
we have visited the Merry
Mixers in Austin last
Thursday evening, and
brought home their banner.
We are leaving flyers at
the clubs announcing our
February 11 dance. This will
be a Special Valentines
Dance and Graduation com-
bined. With weather per-
mitting, we should have a
fine dance. Phil will be doing
the calling and any guest
who is a caller will be invited
to show their talents. The
club is looking forward to a
fine dance and great
fellowship and fun. Anyone
wishing to come and watch
the activity is welcome to do
so. There is no charge for
spectators, only dancers.
The dance will be called from
8 to 1:30 p.m. at the High
School Cafetorium.
Those traveling to Austin
Thursday evening were:
Norby and Minnie Raley,
Jack, Marie, Shane Pool,
Brad Hurta, Zelma Ham
mons, Phil and Margaret
Phillips, Mo, Dawn and
Paula Maxhimer, Kathy,
Steve, and Cara Best and
yours truly. (Hope I haven't
left anyone out).

starting a new class Febru-

Building on Chestnut and
Hwy 95. This is the time for
you to come out and see how
you think you would like to
square dance. If it is not your
cup of tea, you have nothing
to lose. We will be delighted
to have you visit our club
and enjoy the good fellow-
ship.
Monday of last week was
the last Monday evening
that we will be dancing
unless things change. Phil
will be calling in Bryan and
Liz and I plan to go as often
as we can to see that he gets
home okay. We had a nice
group on our first Sunday
evening and when the
weather gets better we feel
that there will be more. At
least we are going to give it a
try. On any set day of the
week, someone has to miss,
so maybe this will be a
better time.
Phil called in LaGrange
Thursday evening of last
week and reported three
new couples joining the club.
The Roadrunners are really
growing and a great group to
dance with. Hicks and Chicks
will be visiting more clubs in
the next few weeks as we
plan to keep the banners
flying.
