Two great Motodist meetings
aro in progress today one in Los
Angeles Cal. and the other in;
Waco Texas. The first named
is the general conference of the-
North Methodist church tho sec-
ond the great mission conference
of tho Methodist Church South.
AH tho biBhops of both churches
are in attendance upon these j
meetings or are supposed to bo.
lhere is a sharp contrast bo-
ween the meetings of these two
Methodist ohurohes One is a-religio-politioal
body tho other a.
straight out earnest zealous
religious body whose members
are as individuals much inter-
ested in political matters as all
good citizens should be but who
gather to discuss the Kingdom of
God and its interests and leave
the question of government to
those in charge. They "render
unto Ceasar that which is Cea-
sar's" and unto God that which
is Ills. The contrast1 shows the
strong characteristics of the two
bodies each holding its principles
which brought about the great
division in 1833 when the North-
ern Methodists undertook to dis
cipline a bisnop because no re-
fused to free his wife's slaves.
What now constitutes the south-
ern ohurqh contended that the
church should conform to tho
laws of the land while the North-
ern Methodists insisted upon con-
trolling the government and ma-
king it amenable to their ideas of
righteousness. The.Los Angeles
meeting will spend a big part of
its time disoussing moans of con-
trolling thogovornmont as point-
ed out in another column while
tho Waco meeting will put in
every hour in worship and in
disoussing the advancement of
Gods kingdom.

"On the Wabash" was present-
ed last night to a good sized au
dience. The company' is deserv-
ing of better houses but
the lateness of tho season and
the many other local events
nightly no doubt are causing the
depression in the attendance.
No compliments can be made of
the company or plays presented
each member thoroughly compe-
tent in their respective parts.
Too much cannot be said of the
rendition of music by the orches-
tra which is perfeot according ' to
our musical critics. Tonight
"The Gambles' Wife" will be
staged tho manager having con-
sented to pres'ent this beautiful

will bo admitted free with one
