Planning Time
This year summer comes on Saturday — and nobody
ever took a trip unless they went somewhere. The shortest
trip I ever heard uv was from an upright position to a
horizontal one. Unless you plan a trip now, your program
will probably wind up flat on its nose.
Even if some of ye Explorers are workin' — short fishin'
trips or overnights or supper sessions (a cookout and song
fest) or canoe cruises with yer best gal in the moonlight
can be worked out. Shux man, even you and uer wife
could have fun on a deal like that with the gang.
People travel hundreds of miles to see yer country. Take
a gander at the license plates iffen you don't believe me.
Why don't you git out and start yer Explorin' in ye "back
yard," so ter speak, if you're not goin' to Philmont or to
a Regional Canoe Base.
Adventure is where you find it — don't fergit no matter
where you go, you drags yorself right along.
Whole families are plannin' to go to the Explorer Leader
Trainin' Conference at Philmont Ranch this summer. If you
want to hear more about puttin' trainin' and family vaca-
tion together, ask yer Scout Executive. Or look back in
Scouting Magazine, page 4 of the December issue and
page 24 of the January issue.
There just can't be any feelin' comparin' with the tingle
that goes up my spine when I crumble the garden dirt in
my fingers, or feel the squishin' uv mud between my toes
when I cool off my feet while fishin'. Shux, this is home —
this is the place where your kids and mine are growin' up.
This is America, the country everybody blasts fer this and
that. But it's still the best place in the world!
There's nothin' wrong with our country that we can't
straighten out. Nuthin'! Let's you and me form a team —
sort uv a Liberty's team — and get on the job. You'll find
some good jobs to git at, like "Git Out the Vote" and such,
in the program plannin' section. Also ye want to git yer
Unit Rating Plan and see how yer Unit is progressin' on
this here "Forward on Liberty's Team." T'warn't nuthin'
put down on that list 'ceptin what will strengthen yer
Explorer Unit.
We want' to git our young fellows thinkin' right and
facing up to their future with faith — faith in themselves
and the faith of their fathers.
CANDID OPINIONS AND CANDIED PHRASES
Some people spurt information 's tho it wuz facks
when all they know's what the last three hairs on a
dog's tail is called dog hairs.
Well, it's purty plain when a bunch of Explorers
votes for a lot of campin' and outdoor events, that's
what they like. An' it's purty plain when another bunch
votes fer socials all the time, that they like their parties.
If you sit yerself down and ask what you like, it'll
come out purty plain that you go some p'—ces 'cause
you like them, and you stay away from others because
you don't like what they do there.
So let your Explorers plan what they want to do. Then
help 'em do it. Shucks, you can steer 'em into new fields
wunce in awhile. You know if you hit the four activity
fields in program planning at least once durin' the year,
yer doin' purty good — as long as the fellows are doin*
things they like.
Progress in larnin' or doin' always starts with the
gang going from where they are, to where they want
to go — to where they ought to be. Leave out the middle
step and you might as well stay to home.
