Editor Daily Nvxii,
Dear Sik : I see in your paper
of the ,24th that I was fined and i
costs, which was the case, f< r keep- j
i ;g a disorderly house, which is not 1
so. Tom Wright, one of our worthy \
po'icemen, who is paid for preserving !
order in the city, was standing at the
side of the huse all the time the
talking was going on, ami never put
i 1 an appeara .ee, which I can prove
by good, respectable citizens. A lien
the trial came off I did not know
vfnether Mr-Giubb or Tom vVright
was the Mayor. They would not
listen to my witnes-es, but fined me
$5 and costs. 1 was so astonished I
could not bring one sound over my
lips, because I did not know who
was running the machine. There
was no fighting going on whatever,
which I can prove, and there are
several houses in town in which there
is gn at deal iti> re disturbance every
night than in mine, but not one w-rd
is said. It is ail right, gentlemen. I
will pay my license, and comply with
the city ordinances in every respect,
and will sell all kinds of liquors, beer
and wine at five cents a drink, lunch
ii. eluded.
If I could not get justice in the
Mayor's court I lnpe the City Coun-
cil will give me due justice. I hear that
Mr. Brenner said would he bet $5 the
Nickel saloo s would be fined every
week, and I believe he is contribu-

Chas. B. Uhlmann.

at the school building,
City Guards and Mi s. Brown's class,
was well attended, and all present
enjoyed themselves exceedingly well.
Dancing commenced at about 9
o'clock, and was kept up until near
12, when all sat down to ail elegant
supper, prepared by some ot the
ladies of the school, and the parents
of the pupils of the 5th grade. Dur-
ing the supper a very fine cake was
raffled off, tickets at 25 cents each.
The cake was won by Mr. E. Zint-
giall', who had it raffled off again,
when Mr. S. Fieuch won it, at.d
presented it to Mr. and Mrs. D. W.
C. Davis in honor of the 5th annive:-
sary of their marriage. The pro-
ceeds of the rafflj were donated by
Mr. Ziiugniff to the school. Alter
supper dancing wjU again resumed,
and continued until a late hour.
We learn that quite a handsome
sum was realized from this ball,
which will be applied towards the
erection of the fence and beautify ng
the school grounds. This is certain-
ly a worthy object, and the Gate
City Guards, as well as Mrs. Brown
and the other ladles, are entitled to
praise for the interest they took in
getting up the entertainment.
