cost that the United States may
have a waterway across the Ielb-
mus of Panama. This bill carries
an appropration of $40000000.
This represents an expenditure far
greater than any singU business
enterprise ever attempted by the
government and will take years
to complete and will give the
United States a most commanding
position upon the high seas.
The repeal of the war tax in-
volving the payment of $73000000
taxes was an important matter
and relieves the country of a great
burden.
A river and barber bill carry-
ing an appropriation of 170000-
000 waa passed.
The Chinese exclusion act waa
reinacted.
1300000 was appropriated to

Intoilcated from alcohol used in "dis
tillery stop" fed to them a bK herd of
cattle stampeded In the stock yards
Thursday. Mora than a score of ani-
mals met death in the rush. Scenes
were enacted that for terror and blood
made old stockmen and cowboys turn
their barks. One man nearly lost bis
life. The berd stampeded numbered
more than 600 of the kind that are
known as "distillery cattle" and are
fattened on the refuse from liquor
