PLANNING
4^ The Scoutmaster's Program Notebook and the
Troop Planning Chart suggest emergency ser-
vice training, first aid and winter camping as best
suited for December. The following Troop and Pa-
trol meeting outlines show how these skills may be
worked into a rich month's program.
First
Week
Opening: Short talk or dramatization emphasizing
"Training for Trouble" as the theme of the
month.
Game: Knot tying relay races (after practice in
Patrol meeting).
Instruction: First aid — use "county fair" method
and simulated symptoms and injuries (page 15).
Patrol Corners: Patrol business. Review first aid.
Game: See Game File, page 30, this issue.
Announcements: Christmas Good Turn for Patrols
and Troop. Plans for mobilization (page 22, Dec.
1949 Scouting) Winter Camp. (Page 18, this is-
sue). Field meet (page 16, this issue).
Closing: Scout Oath, led by Honor Patrol.
Weekly Patrol Meetings
Plan for Patrol mobilization. Review skills and
practice for field meet. Review first aid.
(In the following programs the Opening and
Closing ceremonies are omitted to save space.)
Second
Week
Game: Rope Throw at target (page 17).
Instruction: Continue county fair method of in-
struction in "real" first aid problems, using prob-
lems different from last week.
Patrol Corners: Patrol business. Plans for Patrol
Good Turn. Personal first aid (see HBB1).
Game: See Game File (page 30).

Third
Week
Game: Know your Town — use map of community,
and hold relay race having Scouts run up to place
pins at location of hospital, firehouse, police sta-
tion or sheriff's office, etc.
Instruction: Cold or wet weather camping tech-
niques. Demonstration of clothing by previously
trained Patrol Leaders. Cold weather sleeping —
making beds, folding blankets, pitching tents.
See HBB1 and Camping Merit Badge pamphlet.
Patrol Corners: Patrol business. Complete plans
for Patrol Good Turns and Patrol mobilization.
Game: See Game File (page 29).
Weekly Patrol Meetings
Carrying out Patrol Good Turns. Practice mobili-
zation and contests for field meet.
Fourth
Week
Stage a test mobilization by calling for it on an
offnight (after checking with Patrol Leaders to see
that there is no conflict). When the Scouts have
assembled, hold the Troop Christmas Party. Run a
few simple fun games, sing carols, have refresh-
ments and a grab bag. Every Scout (as part of
mobilization) brings a small gift, costing 15c to
25c. Each draws a number and gets a gift corre-
sponding to that number.
Vacation Camp
and Field Meet
At Council camp site or at favorite Troop site.
At least one night out. First day spent in pitching
tents, making beds and collecting and splitting-
plenty of wood, and practicing for inter-Patrol
contests next day. (Contests may be held on day
hike or in meeting room yard, but are best when
used as a feature of Troop camp.)
On second day hold contests, with Explorers as
judges. Explorers can help prepare for contests by
helping to get the necessary equipment together.
Follow contests with a wide game or winter sports
games — ski races, sled races or snow shoe relay
races. (See HBSM2.)
