Boy Scout Week means our biggest Parents' Night of the year, and if it
succeeds, then so does our spring and summer camping program. I've seen
it happen year after year. When we impress parents during our birth-
day meeting we're going to get the kind of support we need to keep
the outdoor program moving along later in the season. That's why
we give this big meeting all we've got, and here's what goes into it!
CAREFUL PLANNING!
At every opportunity I talk things over
with our Green Bar Council. We're al-
ways looking for new ideas, and I'm in-
debted to two fine books for many that
really work. Open House covers Parents'
Night from start to finish. I like it be-
cause it's down-to-earth and thoroughly
practical. We use Scout Courtesy, Cus-
toms, and Drills, too, to give the Troop
snap and precision for the big night.
GOOD APPEARANCE!
That means getting boys into Uniform.
We know that appearance steps up per-
formance and gives parents a wonderful
impression of the Troop, so we'll hold
several rigid inspections during meetings
prior to the big one. First we check the
Junior Leaders and. all our older Scouts
because they set the example for the rest
of the Trooo . . . and, of course, my own
Official Uniform sets an example for them.
ADD RECOGNITION!
With all the ceremonial trimmin's! All
parents thrill to see their sons receive
badges and recognition. We make Par-
ents' Night Recognition Night and fol-
low through by having each Scout pre-
sent his mother with a miniature replica
of his Badge of Rank. The Council Office
carries these miniatures, and they can also
supply me with inexpensive plaques that
may be inscribed as all-purpose awards.
AND GAMES GALORE!
Plenty of games and fun for all make our
big meeting click! We emphasize Scout-
ing games that show parents what their
sons are learning, and I've gotten plenty
of ideas for these and other games from
the big book, Games and Recreational
Methods. I'd recommend it to every
Leader, along with a fine booklet, Camp
Songs 'N Things, a collection of songs
and stunts to add real Scouting spirit.
