SCOUTMASTER, ARE YOU A TRAILER?
(>(> A TRAILER" is without motive power of its own. Hitched
to something dynamic it "follows the leader." Left to
itself it runs up or down hill, or off the track, as the fates decree,
but always doing damage.
No man leading boys has a right to be a "trailer." In all fair-
ness to the boys in his troop he should be as dynamic a leader
as possible. The Home Study Course in Scoutmastership works
along with you, gives you projects to develop in the troop,—
shows you how to solve your problems. It motivates for your
boys the very best equipment you have. It helps you to make a
better leader of yourself and also to make leaders of your scouts.
A Great Help
anPHIS course has been a great help to me. I expect it to be a
greater help in the future than it has been while studying
on it, for I was often pressed for time and could not see the in-
tention of some things then as well as now.
"We needed both material and method to do better work and
now we can get material more easily and proceed more wisely.
I have been impressed by the necessity shown to give scouts a
chance to learn by experiment and observation, rather than by
rote. Personally, as a teacher in school, it has taught me better
psychology than a normal school. I have learned to leave more
affairs to the responsibility of the scouts.
"I am closing with good impressions of the Course and a sense
of being fitted for better work.
"I thank you for your constant courtesy and wish the best
for the movement and for you."
Frank C. Bechtold,
Piasa, Illinois.
Helped Me in Everything
anPHE following sentence will explain what I think of this
course. I got men interested in it and one is already taking
the course. One will take it shortly if not already started. The
third one will take it after camp this July. It is worth more than
the money paid for it.
"It has helped me mainly in taking care of certain kinds of
boys. Each of your suggestions, even if at first looking queer,
were applied, and in every case worked to a satisfactory finish.
"Have had three independent patrol hikes under leadership of
patrol leaders. Very successful, proving that boys want to be
trusted and they will live up to the trust placed in them.

"The course has helped me in everything in Scouting. I am now
working on a troop committee, a real troop committee. Helped
me to get four A.S.M. Very active and interested too. Patrol
leaders make programs and every boy in troop is given definite
job each week at meeting and hike by the patrol leader. Boys
noticed change, liked it, asked reason why and I told them about
this course and my grades. All boys decided to help me raise
the percentage and are preparing for Court of Honor tests and
carrying on scout work to help me. Have changed all patrols to
boys' and patrol leaders' own pick. Have improved patrol system.
Have put in more scout test games. The course pepped up all
the boys and me.
"Am really sorry that course is over. Will boost it more than
I have so far."
William F. Ostrowski,
239 Hedley Street, Forks, New York.
A Result
AFTER eight lessons you will be pleased to hear that I am
■'—•now Field Executive of Butte Council, and I might add
that the work I have so far had in the Scoutmastership Course
has been a wonderful help."
Eugene L. Smith, Field Executive.
Marysville, California.
Helps in Area Councils
^"|T AM enclosing the final assignments of the course. I have en-
joyed the work very much, and it has been helpful to me.
You will note in item number two of the Scoutmasters' Monthly
Report which I have devised for our Council, that I am trying to
stimulate the scout leaders to take the course. Our leadership
training is a real problem in our Council, the communities are
scattered over an area of over thirty thousand square miles, and
it is impossible to gather them together often for training pur-
poses. It has been a problem to get in regular reports from all
troops, and this form of report card, which I have been using
for only a short time, is proving to be very helpful."
John A. Young, Scout Executive,
Cedar City, Utah.
