Legion and the VFW
Back Marshall Plan
WASHINGTON, Jan. 21, (UP)
Two powerful veteran organiza-
tions have come out for the long-
range foreign aid program.
The American Legion and the
Veterans of Foreign Wars, rep-
resenting some 5,200,000 vet-
erans, have asked Congress to
approve the aid program. The

Why beck, back, back yourself to pieces?
One dose of Bron-chu-line Emulsion gives you
unmistakable relief — a few doses may relieve
it entirely. Contains no chloroform or nar-
cotics and no sweet sugary syrup. Not habit*

veterans organizations base
their support on two arguments.
First, they say, the aid program
will stop the march of what they
call "Red Fascism." Second they
say it will insure America
against an atom bomb attack by
Russia.
In statements submitted to the
Senate Foreign Relations Com-
mittee, both outfits describe the
program as a reasonable invest-
ment in the thing the world
wants most, peace.
Support from the Legion and
the VFW came on the heels of
an ominous report from foreign
aid program experts in Wash-
ington.
The experts say the situation
in Western Germany has set
back the aid plan by six months,
even before the program has
been approved.
Economic specialists point to
the fact that German coal pro-
duction has fallen off and there
is a food crisis in Germany.
These developments, the experts
say, have given what they call
a "serious body blow," to the aid
program as it now stands.

due to this functional
'middle-age' cause?
Are you between the ages 38 and 52
and going through that trying func-
tional 'middle-age' period peculiar
to women? Does this make you suf-
fer from hot flashes, feel clammy,
so nervous, irritable, weak? Then
do try Lydia e. Plnkham's Vegetable
Compound to relieve such symp-
toms! It's famous for this!
Many wise 'middle-age' women
take Plnkham's Compound regular-
ly to help build up resistance
against this distress.
Plnkham's Compound contains no
opiates—no habit-forming drugs. It
helps nature (you know what we
mean!). This great medicine also
has what Doctors call a stomachic
tonic effect.

Philadelphia Phils
Optimistic Over
Team's Farm Clubs
PHILADELPHIA, Pa., Jan. 21,
(I'P) President Bob Carpenter of
the Philadelphia Phils says he's
through buying expensive ball
players for his club. From now
on. Carpenter says, the Phils
will draw from their 15 farm
clubs.
The Philly President says
that he has spent a million and a
quarter for talent since 1944,
while waiting for the farm
youngsters to develop. Now,
Carpenter says, the Phils still
may buy "one or two" players
for 1918, hut they are through
trying to meet what he calls
"preposterous" prices for "fan-
tastic dpals."
Carpenter, and his General
Manager I-Jerb Pennock, express
great hope for their farm pros-
pects and announce that oyt of
74 players due to report for
spring training, 29 will be farm-
hands.
As Carpenter puts it, "If a kid
can hit .390 in any league, I'm
ready to gamble that he's as
good as a .220 hitter in the ma-
jors for whom some club owner
asks $100,000."

Texas Sugar Prices
Tumble 40 Cents Per
100 Pounds Over Night
DALLAS, Jan. 21 (UP)—Re-
fined sugar prices in Texas
have tumbled 40 cents per hun-
dred pounds. The price slash
follows a price pattern estab-
lished on eastern markets yes-
terday.
The drop sent the price of
sugar down to $8 per hundred
pounds. Sugar dealers in Dal-
las say that that is not the end.
The spokesmen for handlers of
the refined sugar product in-
dicate that there may be a price
drop that in the future might
amount to as much as 30 cents
per hundred pounds.
Dallas retail grocers did not
comment on a price decrease on
the sugar they sell in their
stores. Some sources are in-
clined to think that there will
be a cut of about 3 cents per 10
pound bag at the retail level.
The sellers have taken a "wait
and see" attitude toward the fu-
ture activity of the commodity
sold in their establishments,
In a normal year the U. S.
wild rabbit kill weighs nearly
69,000,000 pounds.
WAKE UP YOUR
LIVER BILE—
Without Calomel —And You'll Jump Out of
Bed in the Morning Rarin' to Go
The liver should pour out about 2 pints of
bile juice into your bowels everv day. If this
bile is not flowing freely, your food may not
digest. It may just decay in the bowels. Then
gas bloats up your stomach. You get con-
stipated. You feel sour, sunk and the world
looks punk. . ^ ....
It takes those mild, gentle Carter s Little
Liver Pills to get these 2 pints of bile flow-
ing freely to make you feel "up and up.'

Heroism, Chivalry
Emerges From Bitter
Holy Land Battle
JERUSALEM, Jan. 21, (UP$
A tale of heroism and chivalry
has come out of the fighting be-
tween Arabs and Jews in Pales-
tine.
A 24-year-old Cleveland, Ohio,
girl, Miss Ann Strauss, was
plunged into .the Holy bond
strife over the week-end. She
was driving to a settlement lp
miles ,out of Jerusalem to attend
a party with Alter Rachnizer,
general secretary of. the settle-
ment. - , '
Miss Strauss,"' a slim, brown-
eyed girl,' met .him on the boat
going to Palestine six months
ago. She is secretary to a Jew-
ish official.
As the couple were traveling
along the Jaffa roatj, Arab snip-
ers shot at their truck. The
driver lost control, .and it plung-
ed into .a,ditch. • ■
According tp Miss Strauss,
Rachnizer pushed her down to
the floor of the truck and shield-
ed her with his body.
He was. wounded in the head
and chest before another Jew-
ish truck came to the rescue.
Miss Strauss suffered a broken
left wrist ancl some slight bruis-
es, but ^expects to leave the hos-
pital today.'
