U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
WASHINGTON D.C. The U.S.
Consumer Product Safety Commission is
alerting consumers and public health offi-
cials to the dangers of entrapment and in-
juries associated with pools spas and hot
tubs.
The main hazard of hot tubs spas and
pools is drowning. Other hazards include
body part entrapment and hair entangle-
ment.
Since 1980 CPSC has reports of more
than 700 deaths in spas and hot tubs.
About one-third of those drowned were
children under age 5.
Staff Sgt. Jeffery Ryan gives special attention to Jackie Hackenberry's question during
Sunday School.
CPSC knows of 18 incidents includ-
ing five deaths involving children between
the ages of 2 and 14 who were injured or
drowned because of body part entrapment.
Recently a 16 year old New Jersey
girl drowned when her body was sucked
against the drain of a spa forming a
vacuum seal.
Under normal conditions pipes lead-
ing from a pool's drain or tub into the
pool's pumps draw water from the pool
creating suction. If something blocks the
pool drain leading into this pipe the
amount of suction will increase as the
pump draws water past the obstruction.
The increased suction can entrap parts of
a person's body causing the person to be

CPSC issues warning for pools spas and hot tubs
held underwater. If a child in a pool sits
on the drain outlet the suction can be so
great it can cause disembowelment.
To reduce the risk of entrapment and
drowning current safety standards require
each spa have two outlets for each pump
lessening the amount of suction at any
outlet.
Since 1978 CPSC has reports of 49
incidents (including 13 deaths) in which
the victim's hair was sucked into the fit-
ting of a spa hot tub or whirlpool causing
the person's head to be held under water.
Hair entanglement occurs when a
bather's hair becomes entangled in a drain
cover as the water and hair are drawn
through the drain.

STOP THE STRESS!
GET OFF THE DEBT TREADMILL WITH DEBT ADJUSTMENT
Repay your creditors with a debt adjustment plan that works for you. An individual with a regular income can set up a budget that will permit him to
provide for his family and still pay his creditors and not lose his property. In a debt adjustment bankruptcy court costs and attorney fees can be
paid in full under the Chapter 13 plan (Depending on ETS date).
Debt liquidation is also available under the bankruptcy code. A debt liquidation bankruptcy will discharge most of your unsecured debts and you will not
be required to repay them. An ordinary consumer debt liquidation bankruptcy will be $595.00 (plus court costs).
Under the Texas Property Code a consumer debtor can keep his homestead plus $60000.00 of personal property subject to continuing payment of any
outstanding debts against the property (For instance you must continue making your mortgage payments if you want to keep your house).
Title 11 of the United States Code Section 525...prohibits discriminatory treatment by any government agency (Army Civil Service etc.)...from denying
employment to terminating the employment of or discriminating with respect to employment against a person that is or has been a debtor... This means
you cannot be fired or denied employment because you have filed bankruptcy.

Smith Middle School has not
closed for the summer. The class-
rooms are spotless desks are lined
up in square formation and the

School may be out for the
summer but Sunday School still
means business.
Staff Sgt. Jeffrey Ryan holds
up color illustrations of the Ten
Commandments and recites them
in a sincere voice. Children repeat
them and are bustling with ques-
tions and answers by the end of
class
There is aglow of interest in
the children's eyes as they share
crayons to complete the Ten Com-
mandment pictorials
The pictorials will soon be dis-
plays on the brightly colored walls
of Smith Middle School.

"The temporary chapels were
built with the intent to keep them
for five years. They have been in
use for fifty years" said Chaplain
(Capt.) Gail Porter.
"We needed a place to have
Sunday School and a school
seemed ideal" Proter said.
"Blackboards desks and
chairs would already be provided.
The school board was thrilled to
lend Smith Middle School to us"
she said.
"This has turned out excellent.
We have clean efficient rooms*
blackboards desks and plenty of
space. Not only does this help the
kids think but it helps me think of
things in a different more creative
way" Porter added.
Parents commute from their
regular church to Smith Middle
School to attend Ryan's 9:30-10:30

to attend their regular services.

CPSC helped develop a voluntary
standard for drain covers that reduce the
risk of hair entanglement.
CPSC offers the following safety tips
when using a hot tub spa or whirlpool.
Always use a locked safety cover
when the spa is not in use.
Keep children away from spas or hot
tubs unless there is constant adult super-
vision.
Make sure the spa has the dual drain
covers required by safety standards.
Regularly have a professional check
the spa or hot tub to ensure it is in good
safe working condition and drain covers
are in place and not cracked or missing.
Check the drain covers throughout the

According to Schannep in the
future the commanding general
plans to add Sunday School facili

They will not only be used for

Know where the cut-off switch for the
pump is to turn off in an emergency.
Be aware that consuming alcohol
while using a spa can lead to drowning.
Keep the temperature of the water in
a spa at 104 degrees Fahrenheit or below.
