49th Armored Division Public Affairs
A soldier is screaming for help
out in the field as the medics run
out with a stretcher. They crawl
through mud and brush to recover
the injured soldier and then carry
him a mile through water mud and
rough terrain to safety.
This could be the scenario of a
war. But wit's not it is actually the
pulmination of a Combat Lifesaver
iblass in basic combat medical ser-
vices which soldiers in the 49th
Armored Division participated in
during their annual training exer-
cise on North Fort Hood.
The class was designed to teach
"high speed first aid" to soldiers
with no prior medical experience.
Their job is not to replace a medic.

Texas National Guard Combat Lifesaver students get down and dirty learning what to do
in order to help their fellow soldiers. The students soldiers in the 49th Armored Division'
carry a "patient" through mud on the obstacle course as part of their training.
Guard soldiers learn
to be ready to save
but to supply immediate care to an
injured soldier until the medics can
arrive.
"You normally don't get this
kind of opportunity in civilian life
unless you're a medic or some-
thing" said Spc. Leroy Roman of
the class. "Usually people don't
really know how these things work
but here we're learning."
Students in the class were re-
freshed on buddy aid (splinting
fractures applying tourniquets)
and basic medical tasks (treating
heat and cold injuries and dealing
with chemical agents).
Additionally they learn to trans-
port victims using a military ve-
hicle insert a catheter carry a pa-
tient on a litter and other basic field
medical care.

49th Armd Div Public Affairs
As part of the continuing Texas Army National
Guard and German army exchange program 100
German soldiers arrived on North Fort Hood to
train with soldiers of the 3rd Battalion 144th In-
fantry 49th Armored Division.
The Germans were here to train with the 49th
Armd Div during its annual training exercise.
At the same time soldiers from Company B 3-
144th Inf flew to Schwarzenborn Germany to
train with the 152nd Panzer Battalion of the Ger-
man Army.
The German host unit prepared the American
guard soldiers to compete for soldiering badges.
Soldiers earned the badges by competing in three
event: 200 meter swimming a 19-kilometer march
and marksmanship.
The German soldiers who trained on North Fort
Hood were from the German Army Reserves'
642nd Infantry Company in Baumholder-
Hesmeskeil.

The 642nd Infantry soldiers experienced a wide
spectrum of Texas Army National Guard military
training.
The German's American soldier training began
with a basic M-16 rifle familiarization firing and
also included practicing battlefield tactics using
the Army's new highly sophisticated Precision
Range Integrated Maneuver Exercise equipment.
"I really enjoyed marksmanship training and us-
ing the PRIME equipment" said Sgt. Norbert
Kreis a 14-year veteran of the German army.
PRIME equipment is similar to Multiple Inte-
grated Laser Engagement System gear but uses
satellites to review movements and reactions to con-
tact. The technology represents a Force XXI ini-
tiative.
"The training has been very good. The only
problem that we have had is that there hasn't been
enough time" said Sgt. Roland Schmeer of his dis-
appointment in not being able to spend more time
training.
"Actually the time has not been too short its
been too hot to train" quipped Kreis in response.
