GREAT WESTERN FORUM
Mikala Martin/2nd Armd Div
By Rebecca Matanic

With a little drive and ini-
tiative Cpl. Danny Kimball of
the 15th Military Intelligence
Battalion took an idea and
made it reality.
Kimball who is a Better Op-
portunities lor Single Soldiers
represenative worked through
the organization and his com-
mand to improve gym facilities
for soldiers at West Fort Hood.
The new physical fitness cen-
ter which Kimball was instru-
mental in designing opened
for use in December but did
not have an official ribbon-
cutting ceremony until Feb. 7.
The new fitness center is not
only la rg also is
equipped with free weights and
Cybex-brand weight machines.
The facility also has station-
ary bicycles treadmills stair
steppers and a rowing ma-
chine. Showers are not yet in-
stalled but plans include
shower installation.
The fitness center is housed
in the former military intel-
ligence brigade logistics office.
Padded matting on the floor
has been added along with
mirrors on the walls.
More than $90000 needed
for the project came from Fort

Soldier’s idea becomes fitness reality
Hood’s non-appropriated funds.
A large percentage of the
money required to complete
the project was spent on the
Cybex-brand equipment.
W hen im ball was ap-
pointed project manager for the
fitness center he admitted
being a little skeptical about
the chances of his vision be-
coming reality but was satis-
fied not only with the end re-
sults but also with the support
he received along the way.
“The support I was given
was great” Kimball said.
“When the first crate (of equip-
ment) rolled off the truck I
knew we had a gym” he said.
Kimball “contacted all the
appropriate people on post”
said Col. Richard Allenbaugh
504th military Intellegence
Battalion commander.
One of the people Kimball
contacted who played a big role
in the realization of the fitness
center was Ron Foster from
Directorate of Plans and Com-
munity Activities. Foster as-
sisted in numerous ways in-
cluding the pursuit of the lat-
est in equipment technology.
Although there were many
people involved in the project
Kimball and o£her BOSS pro-
gram soldiers were the people
highlighted during the ribbon-
