A: What really happened to Beauty
and the Beast was that it was canceled
by CBS because of low ratings. But
take heart. Republic Pictures Televi-
sion has sold its 56-episode dff-
network Beauty and the Beast package
to the Family Channel for one year
before releasing it in syndication for
the 1991-92 season.
Q: What ever happened to James
Franciscus? Did he have another series
after Longstreet? —Carole Holien
Watertown S.D.
A: James Franciscus had a very
promising career in the ’60s which
I does not seem to have developed into
major stardom. After Longstreet ended
in 1972 he starred in Doc Elliot (1974)
and in Hunter 1977. Since the early
1970s he has appeared mostly in TV
movies including The Pirate in 1978
and Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy as
J.F.K. in 1981. He has formed his own
production company which has
produced several documentaries and
dramas based on literary classics.
Beyond acting he is also an avid sports
enthusiast and is active on the pro-
eelebrity tennis circuit. He plays in 12
to 15 charity tournaments a year and in
Ibis own tournament The Jim Francis-
cus Toumam ent for Multiple Sclerosis.
He is a trustee on the board of directors
for the Multiple Sclerosis
Association.
Q: heard that my friend Lawrence
Welk is in a nursing home and I would
like to get some information. He has
always been my favorite entertainer and
I feel so bad to hear about him being in
home. Please tell me if it is true and
1 if his wife is still living. I am 89 years
old and live in an apartment here in
adison. Please answer this.
—Christine Olson Madison Minn.
A: You will be happy to hear that
your friend Lawrence Welk is fine and
recently celebrated his 87th birthday
with his wife. He is not in a nursing
home and he is still entertaining at his
resort complex in California. You may

Q: Would you please tell me anything
you know about Bette Midler? I think
she’s the most versatile actress there is
today. I ^eally admire her and would love
to have an address at which I might
write her. —Sharon R. Willis Texas
A: Bette Midler was born in Pater-
son N.J. Dec. 1 1944. She owes her
rather peculiar name to the fact that
her movie buff mother thought Bette.
Davisv first name was pronounced the
way it looked. Growing up Jewish and
unhappy in Honolulu she had few
friends and she often'felt lonely and
different from other girls her age.
Landing a role as an extra in the film
Hawaii while a freshman at the
University of Hawaii gave her a chance
to change her life. She used her
earnings to move to New York. It was
1965 and Bette supported herself as a
file clerk at Columbia University as a
gloves sales clerk at Sterns department
store and as a go-go dancer in a New
Jersey bar. A year later she landed a
role in Fiddler On The Roof. In 1972
she won a Grammy for her debut
album The Divine Miss M. In 1973
she won a special Tony for her
one-woman concerts. In 1984 she
married Harry Kipper they have a
daughter and live in Beverly Hills*

‘Generations’
By Candace Havens
Dear Candace: First of all I love
Generations. I wish it was on for an
hour. The fashions worn by the
characters and the richness of the soap
is really breathtaking.
Secondly I am getting fed up with
Days O Our Lives. Steve plays the part
of street gut and he has no employ-
ment dresses terribly his hair looks
dirty and greasy and yet' he always
seems to have money for other things.
The writers should give him a job and
clean him up. Also Mike Horton
would you see a doctor looking like
him? He dresses weird and is un-
shaven. He is not professional looking
"at all. I would like to see Days start
shaping up the appearance of their
characters. Harriet Slagle East
Liverpool Ohio.
Dear Candace: I have already stopped
.watching all soaps except The Young
[And The Restless. It will soon be
next.
I hate the character Leanna. I think
she is absolutely stupid. She and Jack
Abbott should pay for their dirty
deeds. Ila Stone Grand Prairie

Dear Ila: I must disagree with your
views of Barbara Crampton (Leanna)
on Y&R. She is one of the more
talented actresses on daytime televi-
sion. Her character is an incurable flirt
and Crampton plays it to the hilt.
Dear Candace: I have watched Days
O Our Lives for several years and am
very upset that the real Kim has left the
show. She and Shane are my favorite
couple. Without her the show isn’t
worth watching. Upset in Conroe
Texas.
Dear Reader: Patsy Pease left Days
O Our Lives because she is pregnant.
She was scheduled to work until
mid-April but she had complications
early in her pregnancy and became
very ill. She thought it was best to leave
now rather than risk the health of her
baby. She does plan to return to the
show several months from now.
I want to hear from you! If you have a
