THE FT. HOOD SENTINEL Thursday May 24 1984
During the late spring and sum-
mer many Fort Hood soldiers will
increase their participation in wa-
ter recreational activities. The avoi-
dance of tragic water-related acci-
dents is important for the emotion-
al well-being of family and friends.
The following pointers should be
followed when swimming:
Never swim alone. Use the
buddy system and swim in autho-
rized areas only. Lakes or streams
on 'the Fort Hood reservation are
6ff:limits for swimming. The only
authorized swimming areas on
post are the pools and the Belton
Lake Recreational Area desig-
nated for swimming when life-
guards are on duty.
Anticipate possible emergen-
cies.
Always have a rope or some
buoyant articles within easy access
to thfow to someone in distress. If

CG extends wish
for Memorial Day
On Monday May 28 we will celebrate Memorial ay-tim for
all Americans to pay tribute to the men and women who have
given their lives for the freedom we enjoy.
As we express our gratitude for them we must not forget our
responsibility to protect this freedom. We must stand firmly to
preserve their precious legacy for the sake of all generations to
come.
A quotation from Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address seems parti-
cularly appropriate: “It is for us the living to be here dedicated
to the great task remaining before us that from these honored
dead we take increased devotion to the cause for which they
gave the last full measure of devotion
Memorial Day gives us as Lincoln suggests the opportunity
not only to honor our dead but also to rededicate ourselves
soldiers and civilians alike to the principles for which they died.

drowned by venturing too far out
into deep water on a floating device
(inner tube air mattress or raft) and
then unexpectedly losing the de-

device and never venture into deep
water on an air mattress inner tube
or raft.

approved life preservers on board
for every passenger. Weak or nons-
wimmers should always wear pre-
servers when boating. The law re-
quires operators of boats less than
16 feet in length to have a U.S.
Coast Guard approved life preser-
ver buoyant vest ring buoy or
buoyant cushion for each person
on board.
I would like to make a comment
on your article on page A-5 entitled
“Army life stressful on marriage.”
Your article states a well-known
fact: that Army requirements
put a strain on a marriage and
any families ’t survive.
However the article then goes on
to present ways to terminate the
marriage. It would be to the cou-
ple’s advantage to first seek mar-
riage counseling before deciding to
seek legal advice. There are many
agencies at Fort Hood that either
specialize in or offer assistance
with in marriage problems. I feel
your paper did a disservice to the
readers by not also mentioning
precautions

followed when boating:
Before using a boat know how
to operate it correctly and know its
capabilities and limitations.
—Know how to swim and how to
rescue a person by throwing him a
rope oar life preserver or anything
that will float.
Boats 16 feet to less than 26 feet
in length must have a wearable
U.S. Coast Guard approved per-
sonal flotation device for each per-
son on board and one throwable
PFD for the boat. Also each pas-
senger 12 years of age and younger
in a boat that is underway must
wear a PFD.

Divorce: not only way

Don’t use a. motor exceeding
the maximum allowable horse-
power specified by the boat manu-
facturer otherwise the boat could
capsize or become swamped dur-
ing operation.
Check the weather forecast.
Respect water and wind warnings
and adverse conditions. Head for
shore at the first indication of
either. If you are caught in a squall
or storm seat passengers in the
bottom of the boat or as close to the
center as possible reduce speed
head into the waves at a slight
angle and head for the nearest
shore.
Respect the center of gravity
of a small boat and don’t move
around ore than necessary.
Avoid horseplay.
If a boat capsizes remain with
it until help arrives. An overturned
or even upright boat filled with wa-
ter will stay afloat if it is built to
safety specifications.
Don’t drink and operate a boat.
Drinking is the cause of a large per-
centage of fatal boating accidents.
ways to resolve problems instead
of running from them by legal dis-
solution.
Encouragement of that nature
perpetuates the peer pressure to in-
crease the current divorce rates. It
would benefit our society to work
to reduce the divorce rates and
teach our children how to handle
life instead of leaving every time
difficulty enters our lives.
Those in difficult situations
should consider this: “Don’t do
anything about your divorce until
you have done something about
your marriage.”
