Members of the 227th Avn. Co. 1st Cav. Div.
—will agree that in a sophisticated environment
the misuse of Army aviation will inevitably re-
sult in unacceptable losses.
In hopes of eradicating the loss of life and
combat capabilities 227th Avn. personnel are
placing a stronger emphasis on NOE or Nap of
the Earth training.
To erase some of the confusion that is as-
sociated with NOE flying a confusion that
stem primarily from terminology the
following definition is given Nap of the Earth
Flight flight as close to the earth’s surface as
vegetation or obstacles permit while generally
following the contours of the earth.
Airspeed and altitude are varied as in-
fluenced by the terrain weather and enemy
situation. In flight the pilot uses a weaving and
devious route of movement in order to take
maxium advantage of the cover and conceal-
ment afforded by terrain vegetation and man-
made features.
The air movement plan is an integral part of
the operations order. The plan is prepared only
after completion of the landing and ground tac-
tical plans and is based on the decisions in those
plans.
Airspace control in this type environment de-
mands that this plan be as accurate and as de-
tailed as passible. According to LT Lee S.
Miller Air Traffic Control Platoon commander
for the 227th Avn. Co. “One of the reasons we
fly so low is that we are able to take full advan-
tage of the trees and other natural surround-
ings.”
Certain aspects of NOE flight must receive
great consideration during the preparation of
the first portion of the air movement plan one
of these is the flight route diagram.
According to CW2 Charles L. Prevost also of

the 227th Avn. Co. “Several areas of helicopter
handling and safety are checked precisely
before and during NOE flying.”
Terrain weather and possible enemy loca-
tions and cap abilities ust be studied
extensively to insure that the route chosen pro-
vides the maximum cover and concealment af-
forded by the enviroment.
The nature of NOE requires a route that uses
easily recognizable control points that aid in ac-
curate naviagation. According to First Team
aviation personnel “These control points must
be features which are easily recognizable from
NOE altitudes because a flight directly over or
within a flight corridor is in no way assured.”
The selection of landing zones is another im-
portant sometimes even crucial aspect of NOE
airmobile planning that requires close ex-
amination. At NOE altitudes the aviator will
not see his intended landing zone (LZ) until he
is virtually on top of it.
Because of this location and selection of
landing zones will frequently depend complete-
ly upon map reconnaissance and cockpit
naviagation. Therefore appropriate considera-
tion must be given to recognizable features of
the landing zones and easily naviagable ap-
proach and department routes.
“We normally use the OH58 and UH1 during
NOE training. There are usually two in-
dividuals in the aircraft —a pilot and a co-pilot.
The reason for this being one of these persons
must navigate. As for our landing zone it’s re-
latively small so we must be able to easily and
accurately identify an approach route to the
touch down point” said LT Michael Fitzgerald
commander of the OH58 section of 227th Avn.

see if the pilots have learned to properly handle

modification of the long-standing airmobile

NOE operations require intelligent and
enlightened utilization of Army aviation as
sets. Only then will a knowledge of NOE
enhance the mission accomplishment in the
sophisticated environment of the mid-intensity
battlefield.
