it began operation on
January 14 1974 at Ft. Hood.
Hie name “Maroon Deuce”
was derived from the color
assigned to the Medical
Corps and by belonging to the
2nd Armd. Div. the “Iron
Deuce.”
■The training provided by
the Maroon Duce is for per-
sonnel who possess and are
qualified in a medical Oc-
cupational Speciality.
The training lasts for ten
days. The first seven days
are practical exercises in
various medical functions as

knowledge. The last three
days are for testing part of
die testing includes a twelve
mile march for the men and
an eight mile march for the
women along with a physical

Classes in military hygiene
military courtesy discipline
and field sanitation will be
given as part of the training
by the Maroon Deuce. The
mess personnel will provide

The training at Tent City is

voluntary and students must
have an excellent efficiency
rating by their commanders
before coming. Students can
be removed from the course
at anytime.
One area of training for the
tu ts ill be waste
sanitation. According to 2nd
Lt. John F. Armstrong “D”
Co. 48th Med. Training Of-
ficer there is a total of over
one hundred pounds of waste
produced everyday during a
field problem.
“This waste is a perfect
nesting place for flies rats
and other vermin that carry
se te ry typhoid and
cholera” related Lt. Arm-
strong.
“We want to emphasize the
medical training during the
practical exercises” said Lt.
Loader “D” Co. commander.
Take for example said
Loader “fractures of the cer-
vical spine. These injuries
can be fatal if not handled
properly. The trainees are
taught how to bend a wire
ladder to the body shape of
the injured person. They are
talked through the treatment
step by step and are taught
to remember to avoid any un-
necessary movement and to
use ex trem care in not
moving the patient’s broken
spine.
Arm strong added The
students are drilled that
paralysis or death can result
if the patient is not handled
properly. If the patient is
lying face up the students
are shown how to place a roll
of cloth with the dimensions
of a rolled bath towel under
the neck and that it should
be thick enough to arch the
neck only slightly.”

words “Bend over please.”
