From 1956 until 1962, the
Dallas Museum for Con-
temporary Arts existed as a
separate institution from the
Dallas Museum of Fine Arts.
In 1963 the two merged
under the name of the older
institution (DMFA), but a
Foundation for the Arts was
formed to serve as a holding

museum.
Q The Museum League introduces an annual "studio tour" with nine Dallas artists
participating. Several Dallas art groups, some individual artists, and a patriotic
group charge that the DMFA is "being used for the presentation of the art and
concepts of communism, and to the neglect of patriotic Americans and Texas
artists."
1956
Gulf Caribbean Art features a large collection of contemporary works by artists
living in the American Gulf states and Latin American countries (DMFA).
I' Texas Architecture - 1956. A one-man retrospective of Dallas artist Otis
Dozier represents the first in a series of solo exhibits by Southwestern artists.
Q Lawyer and Trustee, Maurice Purnell succeeds J.T. Suggs as President of the
Dallas Art Association. Francis Henry Taylor of the Metropolitan Museum judges
the 18th Annual Texas Painting and Sculpture Exhibition and is guest speaker at
a DMFA banquet.
I A Society for Contemporary Arts is founded by fifteen members who convert the
Courtyard Theatre into an art showroom.
1957
A solo exhibition on Andrew Dasburg of Taos, New Mexico, is organized by the
DMFA and results in a national tour circulated by the American Federation of Arts.
Q The "Society" changes its name to the Dallas Museum for Contemporary Arts
and moves into a Preston Center gallery. Edward Marcus is elected first President,
and the inaugural exhibition is called Abstract by Choice.
1958
* Wolf Eagle by Morris Graves, a gift of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence S. Pollock, Sr.
* Dan Wingren: Paintings (DMFA). 100 Years of American Architecture. ; Top
Talent from Texas Colleges (DMFA).
Q Young artists Barney Delabano, John Lunsford, and Esther Houseman join
the DMFA staff (later becoming Curator for Exhibitions, Senior Curator and
Registrar/Craft Coordinator, respectively).
* Douglas MacAgy is named Director of the DMCA, which moves into larger
quarters in a building on Cedar Springs. Its exhibitions include: The World of
Realism; Action Painting; and Laughter in Art.
