If you see an elephant in this ink blot, your problem is
you've never met one. Because an elephant doesn't
look anything like this blot. Like some of the new
cars, he has a trunk in the front. He also has more
in the way of ears than anyone really needs.
We know about elephants because we have seen
them in the movies. We know about L*M filter ciga-
rettes because we make them.
You can learn a lot about elephants by simply look-
ing at them, but you have to smoke an L*M to know
that L*M has found the secret that unlocks flavor in
a filter cigarette. And to know that in today's L*M,
with its patented Miracle Tip. fine tobaccos can be
blended not to suit a filter but to suit your taste.
We suggest you go to the movies and look at some
elephants. And try an L4M.

North Texas, though

only important occurrei

FALLOUT FIGHT While others in the U.S.
trying to forget the peril of nuclear attack and its
dioactivity. New York Gov. Nelson Rockefeller is c
paigning to put a fallout shelter in every New Y
home. Rockefeller agreed to a legislative comprom
shelter building would be voluntary and construc
costs tax deductible.
But Rockefeller is not the only person who is
fighting against fallout and for civil defense. Oik
the Chat columnists is very much concerned about
inadequate Denton civil defense and lack of plans
evacuation.
GROWING CRISIS—In the Union of South Afi
the crisis is growing as South African Negroes <len
strated against the Union's harsh racial policies. In
day. 72 natives were shot. The white population is rii
and frightened. Prime Minister Hendrik Verwoe
government proclaimed a state of emergency m
which anyone could be arrested without charge,
without trial for a year.
But South Africa is not the only place where ri
tension is mounting. Not more than 200 miles eas
Denton, the town of Marshall is the site of lunch c
ter sit-down strikes and racial demonstrations.
MASTIF RIDE—As part of the training of
seven U.S. astronauts on their man-in-space miss
with Project Mercury, the men are being taken f
ride in Ihe machine called MASTIF (the "Multiple
Space Test Inertia Facility"). In the machine, the
are spun in three different directions at once: 1
over heels, round and round as if in a swivel chair,
sideways as if the arms and legs were the spokes
wheel. LIFE gives its third first-person report or
Astronauts' training.
BRANDED WOMEN—For the movie "Five Bi
ed Women," the story of five Yugoslav girls who,
ished as colhborators, redeem themselves with
partisans, actress Silvana Mangano is required to i
her long hair. The article is the cover story fca
April 11 issue of LIFE.
WORLD'S WEEK—At
Niagara River, workers
carve two spectacular can-
yons to divert water around
the falls and build the
free world's largest hvdro-
electric project. . . . LIFE
continues its series and re-
crea'es the fantastic le-
gc-ds <>f American folklore.
. . Record company sets
aside $75,000 for campaign
to push singer Rod Lauren.
. . U.S. launches Tiros
weather satellite with wide-

the earth's surface. . . .
That's LIFE.
