SBDC Promotes Growth
By Linda La MarcaThe mission of the Tarleton State University Small
Business Development Center (SBDC) is to promote eco-
nomic growth and expansion, innovation, increased pro-
ductivity and improved management for small businesses
in an 11 county service area including Comanche, Erath,
Eastland and Hamilton counties.
Part of a national program administered by the Small
Business Administration, the program serves as a focal
point for bringing together public and private resources.
There are 57 regional offices throughout the U.S. in-
cluding four in Texas. The Tarleton SBDC sub-center, part
of the 95 county Northwest Texas SBDC region, is one of
more than 950 service locations nationwide.
Tarleton's SBDC program, located in the College of
Business Administration, is designed to deliver up-to-date
comprehensive counseling and technical assistance to the
small business community. Services include assisting
small firms with business plans, financial, marketing, pro-

duction and organizational problems. Networking with
other offices in this region allows the Tarleton SBDC of-
fice to provide assistance in the areas of manufacturing,
technology, international trade and government procure-
ment.
Confidential counseling is provided for potential and
existing small business owners at no charge. Training
seminars, workshops and speaker programs are provided on
a regular basis.
For Fiscal Year 1997-1998, the Tarleton SBDC
worked with 176 clients in over 1015 hours of counseling.
During that same fiscal year the economic impact of Tar-
leton's SBDC clients was measured as follows - 31 new
jobs, sales of $1,250,000, paid state taxes of $135,000, paid
federal taxes of $61,100, received SBA loans of $683,000
and non-SBA loans of $160,000.
