County Reports Higher Sales
Erath county merchants reported strong sales gains
in the second quarter of 1992, compared to the same
period of 1991. Sales for the January-June period also
grew significantly. Other Cross Timbers counties ex-
hibited mixed sales patterns, as two reported higher
revenues and two noted declines.
Merchants in Erath county revealed gross sales of
$83.4 million in the April-June period of last year. This
figure reflects gains of 13 percent over the previous year
and 4.5 percent over the 1990 figure. The second quarter
sales gain was broadly based, reflecting increases in
agriculture, manufacturing, transportation and utilities,
retail trade, and services. Construction was the only
major sector reporting a decline, and wholesale trade
was virtually unchanged. Aggregate sales for 1992's
first two quarters were $160.8 million. This value com-
pares favorably to the $142.2 million and $151.6 million
figures reported in 1991 and 1990.
Bosque county also reported higher sales last year.
Its $31.7 million gross sales total is 13.6 percent above
the previous year's figure, but is 9.2 percent below the
value for the same period two years earlier. The county's
$59.9 million sales aggregate for the January-June pe-
riod is 8.9 percent above the value noted in 1991, but
falls 14.7 percent short of the 1990 statistic.
Hamilton county reported the strongest sales gain
of any local county between 1991 and 1992. Gross sales
grew from $15.9 million in 1991 to $26.8 million last
year. Last year's figure also compares favorably to the
$21 million revenue total for the second quarter of 1990.
Aggregate sales for last year's first six months were
$44.3 million. This value is 44.6 percent greater than
year before, and is 8.7 percent above the value posted
two years earlier.
Comanche county noted weak sales last year, as its
$33 million second quarter gross sales value fell 13.6
percent below the year before and 10.9 percent short of
the 1990 figure. Aggregate sales for the first six months
of 1991 were $64.6 million, reflecting losses of 10.6 and
seven percent when compared to 1991 and 1990 totals.Eastland county merchants posted $72.5 million in
gross sales during last year's second quarter. This figure
falls 8.7 percent below the 1991 level but remains
almost 20 percent above the 1990 figure. County aggre-
gate first-half sales amounted to $137.1 million. This
value is 6.7 percent below the year-before statistic but is
17.4 percent greater than the 1990 figure.
The State Comptroller's office collects and reports
county sales data on a quarterly basis. Second quarter,

Higher Unemployment
Reports from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics
reveal that the United States and Texas experienced
higher jobless rates in 1992 than in 1991, as the economy
continued a lackluster recovery.
The nation's jobless statistic rose from 7.1 percent
in January to a high of 7.8 percent in June, before
declining to 7.3 percent at year-end. The average of 7.4
percent for this statistic compares unfavorably to 1991's
