Agricultural Prices Post Small Gain
Lower crop values offset most of a moderate advance
in livestock prices to increase the Texas farm commodities
price index in the third quarter. On the national level, a
small increase in farming costs combined with a moderate
decline in farm prices to erode the farm product purchasing
power ratio.
The Texas Agricultural Statistics Service reports that
the index of prices received by the state's farmers and
ranchers advanced by 0.6 percent in the third quarter to 171
percent of the 1977 average. The livestock and products
price index moved two percentage points higher while the
crop price index fell by 3.1 percent.
The index of prices received for livestock and prod-
ucts rose from 205 percent of the 1977 average at the end
of the second quarter to 209 by mid-September. This
advance reflected higher values for beef cattle, sheep, and
milk, and lower hog and wool prices. The average price of
lambs was unchanged.
The crop price index fell from 128 in June to 124 in
September. Lower prices of corn, grain sorghum, and
wheat contributed to this decline, while higher costs ofcotton, hay, and oats helped offset it.
The index of prices received by U.S. farmers fell by
two percent in the third quarter. This movement, combined
with a 0.5 percent advance in the prices paid index, pre-
cipitated a 2.5 percent erosion of the farm products pur-
chasing power ratio.

Erath county maintained a three consecutive year
growth pattern by posting sales of $44.5 million in the
January-March span of 1990. While this value was only 2.5
percent above the figure noted for the same three months
of 1989, it was 17.4 percent greater than the aggregate
reported for the same time span of 1988.
