in surgery, having amputated many limbs,
and also attended to the dentistry of the soldiers.
He commenced the study of dentistry
with Dr. H. M. Compton, in the army, and
he continued in this department until the
close of the war. This gave him an unusually
good practice; and an experience which has
been of the greatest value, and perhaps accounts
in a measure for the wonderful skill
in his chosen profession. In many fierce
engagements he took his part in the ranks
and showed his devotion and bravery as a
soldier.
After the war closed, our subject returned
to the farm in Virginia, engaging there for
a time in farming, later in iron-making; but
