FRONTISPIECE: American Progress, by John Gast, 1872. Oil on canvas, 17"/, x 21'/2 inches.
Courtesy Autry Museum of Western Heritage, Los Angeles.
Brooklyn artist John Gast painted this canvas to symbolize Manifest Destiny, the inevitable
movement of the American empire across the West. A heavenly female figure, with the Star of
Empire on her forehead, holds a school book in one hand and telegraph wires in the other,
symbolically carrying civilization across the continent. Indians and wildlife recede ever west-
ward before the oncoming miners, farmers, settlers, stagecoach, and railroad.
