I believe In the United Statei 4

IS THE JEW DISTINCTIVE.
The following interesting article
has been contributed to our columns
by the distinguished pournalists Mr.
Walter Hurt:
"The man on the street and some-
times even the learned college profes-
sor and the all-knowing journalist will
without any hesitation make some
sweeping remark about the Jew say-
ing that the Jew is this that or the
other thing simply because he it a
Jew. The Jewish mind necessarily
works that way because it is Jewish
and therefore different; which means
worse than or inferior to other
minds. Even the sage newspapei
scribe or erudite professor seldom
stops to ask whether there really is
any reason for so bracketing a group
of humans and making such sweeping
generalization regarding it; whet' (-
it is not a case of merely giving a bad
name or character to those whom w
dislike the dislike being due to other
causes entirely . . . Only fools or
knaves say the Jews is this or that
or something else." Dr. S. W. Dein-
ard in "The American Jewish World."
Although the foregoing charge of
verbal vitriol obviously is aimed only
at non-Jewish writers whose opinions
disagree with Doctor DeinanTs it
nevertheless finds a target in many of
his ablest editorial and rabbinical col-
leagues. In fact his views on racial
psychology and characteristics are at
tariance with those of the majority
of Jewish thinkers .who therefore
must be included with those whom he
indicts as "fools or knaves."
For example so eminent a Hebraist
as Israel Zangwill accounts for alien
antipathy to the Jew on the grounds
of "dislike for the unlike." This ex-
planation should be acceptable to the
Jew for certainly it is less offensive
to his self-esteem than is its alterna-
tive of fundamental faults.
In an editorial in a recent issue ot
' "The Scribe" Dr. Jonah B. Wise
speaks of the Jew as "an outstanding-
ly strange phenomeon in the body po-
litic" that to the non-Jewish masses
"never was understandable." At an-
other point in this editorial Doctor
Wise says "The Jew was and per-
haps still is and still is a mystery
both spiritually and physically."
Such testimonial instances might
be multiplied indefinitely but these
are sufficient to show that represen-
tative Jewish publicists admit -the
mental and temperamental differen-
ces between Jew and Gentile.
With due deference to Doctor Delq
ard for whose superior powers as a
thinker and writer I have the utmost
respect I yet am constrained to say
that he places himself at a decided
disadvantage by his attitude of intol-
erance when he mounts his familiar
hobby of denial of race differentiation.
- There is no justification for the as-
sertion that the postulate of different
mental modes of Jew and Aryan nec-
cessarily implies inferiority of the
former. As well might the rule be re-
versible and these mental differences
be used as an argument for the Intel-
lectual inferiority of the Aryan. Why
should the Jew forever insist on mak-
ing himself a target for enmity where
none exists and an object of dispar-
agement when none is intended? Such
an attitude surely does not make for
inter-racial concord.
1 It really would seem that some
Jews are determined to be disliked;
even by those who are not inclined to
dislike them. And they go about it the
right way to achieve their purpose.
For my part I can conceive of no
reasonable objection to being regard-
ed as different from the Aryan race-
mentally and in many other respects;
rather the Jew should deem such an
estimate a compliment.
The Jew should be if not proud ai
least well satisfied that he is distinc-
tive. In truth he boasts of his racial
singularity yet is resentful when
others admit it; by this inconsistency
turning honor into reproach. Ver-
ily a most difficult person to please.
Few will be found to deny differen-
ces in characteristics between all dif-
ferent peoples. These differences are
greater in degree according as the
ference in environment is more mark-
ed necessarily resulting in a corre.
ponding measure of difference in cus-
toms habits and other expressions of
material exigency in the manner of
living. These inevitably determine the
mode of thought for men's minds are
molded by their experiences just as
all mental impressions are the reflec-
tion of external effects upon the sen-
ses. Qualified psychologists Jewish and
non-Jewish agree regarding these ra-
cial differences in the cerebral pro-
cesses resulting from variation of en-
vironment. The more abrupt the de-
parture in physical type the more
acute the mental divergence. Thus the
difference between racial branches is
not nearly so marked as that between
basic races. The dissimiltude of Jew
and Aryan is no more even less per-
hapsthan that of the Occidental
type and nay other Oriental of the
same parent stock.
In case of the Japanese of course
they being of a different basic race
the mental differences are more radi-
cal; being so great in fact as to be
irreconsilable. Yet no inferiority to
Occidentals is for this reason imputed
to the Japanese; indeed their intellec-
ual and cultural superiority in many
respects is almost universally conced-
ed. The whole question is one not of
inequality but of unlikeness.
However foolish or knavish it may '
be I wish here to repeat an assertion
made by me in a recent article: "It is
an incontrovertible fact that Jew and
' Gentile are different different in
habits customs methods viewpoints
ethics and ideals. The thing to do is
not to deny these differences but to
reconcile them." The Jewish Ledger.
SISTERHOODS PLAN SENDING
SERMON TOPIC WEEKLY.
Iq the report of Temple Beth-El
Sisterhood of Fort Worth Texas it is
recommeded that next year the Sis-
terhood issue weekly notices announc-
ing the sermon topics and inviting
every interested Jewish person in
Fort Worth to the Temple Services.
It is also recommended to make an an-
nual publication of the year book and
distribute it to every member of trie
Sisterhood. The report shows that the
organization has made remarkable
progress .enjoying a 100 per cent in-
crease. From a mere handful of ever-
willing workers it has grown until
now almost every woman in the Ten
pie is a member of the Sisterhood.
Through the organization of a Parent-
Teachers' Association the interest of
the Parents in the education of the
children has been awakened. Talks
along religious and secular education-
al lines have been given by specialists
in the field of child welfare. Through
this organization Beth-El Sisterhood
has become affiliated with the Moth-
er's Council which keeps them in
touch with the work being generally
done for the child. Relative to .the
Sabbath School the work of the Sis-
terhood has been confined to forms of
