Persons desiring to take boarders during
the session of the Sunday School Assembly
aud Summer Institute will do well to re
port the fact in writing stating the number
of boarders they can take and the rate per
day week pr month with and without lodg
ing to the secretary Sterling Fisber.
Last Sunday the head of the river was
visited by a good many people who enjoy
ed themselves boating and chatting on the
river's cool brink There should be two
or three better boats than tbey now have
there to properly accommodate the public
and tbo need will be still greater in the near
future.

Steele A Code have made a tramway across
the river euding against the hill on this side
which has enabled them to rebuild their
dam at much less expense than they could
have done otherwise aud as it is a perman-
ent thing they can keep the dam in repair
at a small cost. The new dam is made of
brush and gravel and is thought will stand
ordinary freshets.

The irrounds for the S. M. S. S. A. A S.
I. are beinc rapidly put in order for the
opening on the 11th of next month. The
contract for fencinc the Grounds has been
let to R. 3. Smith who is now at work.
The Committee put Mr. M. H.Murchison in
charge of clearing the ground and hired of
the county some eight or nine convicts wno
did the greater part of the work. The view
from the brow of the hill near where the
lecture stand will be is erand and beautiful
to the right are the rolling prairies dotted
here and there with patohes or goiaen
stubble among the prevailing green of cot-
ton and corn while in front bordered by
the crystal river stretch the broad San Mar
cos bottom-lands and to the left lie the
chain of bills or mountains on one of which
we stand. There is a practicable route for a
wagon or carriage road from the road Delow
to the summit and men are now at work
opening that and other roads about the
grounds.
Rev. B. Harris iu last week' Galveston
Advocate thus refers to some matters of lo
cal interest and pride in this locality :
I had fondly hoped that some mention
would have been made in the Advocate of
our great Chautauqua enterprise. The citi-
sens of San Marco have taken hold of the
movement with great zeal and spirit and
nearly f 6000 have been aubacriDea. A
most beautiful spot has been selected and
purchased upon an elevated mountain-crest
with picturesque new irom every poim
pure bracing atmosphere and contiguous
to the lan Marcos spring iaae mua nice
which in beauty transparent clearness and
temperature are unsurpassed in the country.
This is the verdict of those from every part
of the United State who have visitttd this
section. Onr people will leave nothing un-
done to make the enterprise a sneers. We
We can have here one of most healthful and
pleasant snmraer resorts in the state and by
combining with it the Chautaoqaa idea may
make the movement one of untold advan-
tage to the people of this great state and es-
pectaBy the rising generation.

CHEATHAM On Sunday last at the resi

rey Judge Henry Cheatham aged 87
years.
Judge Cheatham was originally from Ten.
nessee came thence to Arkansas and at last
settled in this county in 1846. He wa a
good man of the first-class kind genial and
true. We recollect often hearing him re
late that his ancestor fought nnder Wash.
ington during the war of our National in
dependence and hence be continued to hon-
or the old flag and stood bravely for the
Union during the late civil war when to do
so involved great personal peril. He rjaased
quietly into the sleep of death.
Why weep we then for him who havmg

obvious that is. if tbe new venture should
attraot any considerable patronage. But as
to Ran Maroos needing a larger and bettor
nnr.Br than the Fbbb Pbkss we beg to differ.
It has always bad quite as good a newspaper
as it deserved considering me pairouK
bestowed. Then the Fbek Pbbss is a large
as the Advertiser while Bastrop town and
county are far ahead of Son Marcos aud
Hay oounty in population and wealth. If
the Advertiser is a good enough paper for
the former then why is not the Fbm Pbess
good enough for the lattor?
Having recently had occasion to say some-
thing of Huntsville in connection with our
Into visit there we copy from the Item of
that place. the following reference to the
health there as contrasted with Hon Marcos.
The Item gives a long list of the sick nnd
adds :
Ti.a M TV'n nf our town don't complain
of idle time just now. They are going from
morning till nignt ana irom nigui wi mu.u-
ing. What a pio-nio for the doctors I
Here in San Maroos. we are happy to say
sickness is comparatively rare and the doc-
tors 4 'enjoy" a great deal of leisure.
Notice-Fesllval.
The Ladies' Aid Bociety of the Baptist
church will give a festival in the court house
yard on to-morrow (Friday) night The
grounds will be handsomely lighted and
refreshment served in various part of the
grounds. A good time is anticipation and a
genoral invitation exienaea.
