Free School Bytlem" ha don for oar peo-
ple Tula (Halifax) wa th wealthiest
county in the Stat before th war and her
people noted for reflnment and intelligence
priding themselves on their fin schools and
ehurchea. Now there is not a school of any
not in th county and in this plao of 12
or" 1500 inhabitant and th business oentre
of th county there is not a single male'
school all waiting for th free tdhool to
open th 1st of Out whioh will will proba
bly be taught for four or five month in th
year and th balano of the tint the children
are Idle. "Well " you will ask. "why don't
the people get up a good private sohooL"
For the same reason that we could not get
up a good male school in San Maroos so
long as B free school was taught; there are
too many people who do not value the
education of their children sufficient to pay
for sending them to school when they can
end them a few months in th year for
nothing. I can bnt bo struck with the
difference in the distribution of the free
school funds in San Marcos and here and
the result. There you can send to the
school of your choice and get the benefit of
the aohool fund also here you must sendtl
to the school of somebody else' ohoioe
whether you like it or not open to all alike
decent peoplo's children forced into the
common herd with the riff-raff of oreation.
But to illustrate a little. When I arrived
here in August I found the good people of
this place very much interested in the open-
ing of their female college. They had just
completed a comfortable commodious build-
ing to accommodate from eighty to one
hundred students the building was bought
by a most estimable lady with a full corps
of the best teachers in the country and her
school opened under very flattering circum-
stances the F. F. V's of the country send-
ing their daughters to board in the college.
I started my daughter who Is not yet six-
teen and who I think is a fair representa-
tive of Son Marcos schools hoping she
could at least so into the second classes. To
my surprise I might as well say it gratifi
cation she was the most advanced scholar
in the school and had to be classed entirely
to herself all the way through her studies.
As to her music my four sisters (all of whom
were educated in the best schools of Vir-
ginia) admit that she has been batter! aught
than any of their children. Now what
makes-this difference? '' The answer is
plain and any intelligent citizen here will
give it to you: "This miserable system oi
common free schools." Then three cheers
for the schools of San Marcos and three
times three for Judge K. for the manly po
sition ha has taken in this matter and to
show I am sincere in the appreciation of the
efforts of our people to sustain their schools
I will bring my boy back about 1st of Ooto-
ber to school again. Hoping the Fbxb
Pbess will continue to prosper and it ed
ltor never grow old I am
Yours very truly

BBMABXS ON TBI ABOVE
We are elad to hear from
our worthy
friend Mr. Fourqurean
but inasmuch as
we are a thorough believer in the . blessings
of the Free Sohool system which it seems
to have been the principal object of his let
ter to denounce we feel bound to aay a few
words bv way of reply. W are surprised
that a gentleman of Mr. Fourquraan's gen
eral intelligence should show himself so far
in the " gall of bitterness" with regard to
Free Schools. If the leading people ofYirgin-
iaare as we presume them to be of hi way of
thinking no wonder their free sohool system
is a failure because they would take special
care to make it to. After all however it
most be vastly better than the "old dispen
sation" for tn departure oi wnicn our
correspondent mourns and will not be com
forted for we presume even he will not pre.
tend that during that period the mas of

al opportunities whatever. Education wa
a matter of " close communion" restricted

My Reply. '
Week before last there appeared from
my pen a piece entitled '"A new Prophet"
and last week a "replvM was given which for
depth of thought and sweetness of spirit has
scarcely an equal. I hereby subjoin a few
words.
1. Bro. Hendon seem wonderfully stir-
red up at tbe audacity of any one who would
dare to coll in question anything stated by
Bro. Martin. I simply laid Bro. Martin'
word along by the side of the word of God
and will leave it to th judgment of this
community as to which it right Mr. Martin
or th word of God. I stand by what I
wrote. ...
2. Bro. Hendon 'haa possibly forgotten
that ha tood op in our church and before a
larg audinno publicly declared that he
could not call n th Christian Church bo-
cause he did not believe n to b any part
of th Christian Church. . I aay he ba poa-
