Editor Free Press: While wo
dislike very much to appear id publio
print we trust you will allow us
through your paper to correct somo
errors into wbioh you have fallen in
your comments upon the note of Mr..
McBride in your last issue we do-
sire this correction not so much in re
card to our own offioial conduot as we
do to the false attitudo in which you
plaoe President Rounsavall of Coronal
Institute.
When we eontraoted with that gen
tleman at tho beginning of this echo-
lastio year we required him to contract
for his pay upon the basis of actual
daily attendance upon the sohool he
receiving pay only for scholars in actu-
al attendance and of course this made
it to his interest to have the sohool
opened at such time as would securo
the greatest attendance.
In considering the time of opening
the school tho trustees in the light of
tho experience of former years decid
ed that whatever term of school we
could have should be taught at the
olosc of the scholastic year. 1st be-
cause we at that time did not even
know how much money we would bo
entitled to and 2d because in forme?;
years the school money had been paid
into the treasury of the county aa the
tax was collected and it had often
been the case that thero was but littlo
money in the treasury with which to
pay tcaohers until January first and
tho failure to make prompt payments
was embarrassing alike to trustees and
teaohers; wbioh difficulty we as trus-
tees were determined 'to avoid; and
3d because our experience had taught
us that there was a larger attendance
of scholars in tho spring and summer
months than in the fall and winter
months and wo understood it to be
our duty to arrange to accommodate
the greatest number. These aro some
of tho reasons we took into considera-
tion and after what we deemed duo
consideration and to us a satisfactory
investigation of the matter came to
tho above conclusion. And on being
informed that there was money in the
troasury wo ordered the sohool open
ed on Monday January 19th as that
was tho first Monday after the close of
tho present school month so as not to
interfere with the private arrange
ments of President Rounsavall.
Now while wo have consulted and
advised with President Rounsavall as
we deem it our duty to do on matters
of interest to the school and havo
given due and proper consideration to
his views upon all subjoots relating to
the school and have endeavored to re-
spect his private rights not inconsist-
ent with tho interests of the school
and have full confidence in his honesty
judgment and ability; and while we
feci that we could follow no one more
competent or worthy of being leader
in matters of this kind wo havo never
seen in him the slightest disposition to
Innd or influence us in our action in
any matters pertaining to school inter
ests; but he has always declared Him
self ready to obey our instructions
and ready to opeu tho school when
ever ordered; expressing to some of us
it is true a preference for the spring
months because at that time last year
he had the largest free school attend
ance and thought it would be so this
year. And we say that we have in re
l.itlon to tho postponement of tho
school term and all other matters of
school interests acted solely upon our
own judgments and that he is in no
way chargable with the postponement
of the school; but the blame if blame
there is. must rest npon our shoulders.
Very respectfully your ob't. serv'ts
S. B. McBride.
