General lliomas will not have oo

Tho 'new-born zeal" proverbial-
ly imputed to those who contract
an unnatural alliance evidently an-
imated General Thomas in his tehti-
inony before the Inquisition Com-
mittee. Ho hates tho South with
tho vindictive- feelings of one who
has carried sorrow and desolation
into hi native land.- and ho would
disarm tho suspicions of tiio Radi-
cals by an excess of devotion to
thoir cause. But. who believes his
story of an inchoate rebellion in
the South? lie implicates nobody
in tho conpiracy ; ho docs not indi-
cate the scene of tho coming explo-
sion; he authenticates his state-
ment by no simple circumstance of
probability it in ix vuguc indefinite
intangible figment of imagination;
yet it is solemnly paraded before
the country as furnishing a su in-
dent provocation for the perpetua-
tion of a military despotism in the
South. No doubt General Thomas
finds it very flattering to his vuni-
ty and perhaps not entirely in-
different to his interest to bo" con-
tinued "in command of four States;"
but neither tho integrity of tho
Union nor tho welfare of tho coun-
try is likely to be promoted by tho
system of military usurpation jr-
valent in the South. They who
have some regard for tho safeguards
of republican liberty will not be
frightened by n phantom into ap-
proval of a mcasuro most repug-
nant to the principles of tho Con-
stitution. General Thomas must be
more explicit as wull i.s more con-
sistent in his story lfo must not
ay iu one breath that the Southern
peoplo aro "utterly beaten" ana i
the next that they meditate anoth-

On tho ovening of September
after traveling for hours in a drench-
ing rain they 'slopped at tho hacien-
da In Fran eas a splendid estate.
Tho vehicles were driven through
tho great door into tho '-('ratio" or
court yard. Tho room on tho right
of tho entrance with its only door
opening into it was given to tho
husband and fomnlo part of the fam-
ily. That directly opposite was oc-
cupied by tho gentlemanly projiie-
tor. Mot n single room in the large
establishment had an outsido door.
Closing tho great door rendered tho
whole a pretty good fort; and this is
the general character of hacienda
mansions. Captain C. and tho two
sons slept in the vehices as a'gunrd.
Tho room of tho family w.ib with
out light excepting through the in-
ner door There was much talk of
robbers on the road. Kain contin-
ued to pour down throughout the
night and rendered the darkness
intense. Tho parents occupied tho
only bedstead the little girls a pullet
on the floor opposite the door. Tho
gentleman slept with two revolvers
under his pillow.
As wet peoplo always do in good
quarters' every one slept soundly.
But about midnight tho lady was
aroused by somo one moving in tho
room and gently waking her hus-
band whispered to him that there
was a robber in the house. Jie sprang
up and saw by tho dim light of tho
door tho dim'forni of a person (as
he thought; passing out ami closing
the door reeling his way along
tho wall he reached tho door and
drew il open demanded in Spanish

there? At tho same instant his
hand came in contact with a person
behind the door and inside. He
naturally thought it was a second
robber and expecting instantly to
receive a stiletto sprang back
reached the bed seized and cocked
one of the pistols saying "who are
you ? What do you want ? 1 ou are
a robbor I I have a pistol leave
instantly or I shall shoot you !" Hut
no response came and instead tho
person as distinctly traced by the
feet advanced directly to thegonlle-

to stab him. Perfectly self-posses-

so close that with his left hand he
grasped the person and leveling his
right arm from tho elbow so as to

vitals thrust forward the pistol till
it came in contact and fired I A

lettings of mail contracts in tho
States of Georgia Alabama .Missis-
sippi and Arkansas closed on t;ed-
nesday. On -ubout one-third tho whole
number of routes advertised there
were no bids offered. On many of
those for which proposals wore re-
ceived tho compensation asked was
so far above mail-pay rates that tho
routes could not be disposed of; and
in all such cases the lowest respon-
sible bidders have been written to
and such offers made as the .Depart-
ment can afford to pay.
Tho remaining routes were ac-
cepted securing tho best possible
nnd most frequent service which
could bo obtained.
The Dopartinont has not only
used every ell'ort but evinced a
commendablo degree of anxiety to
restore frequent and regular mail
facilities throughout the entire
Southern States.
The service let during tho last
