her life was to be fulfilled and she would enter
school. O walls of Baylor, within and without
you are draped with the purest dreams and
hopes and plans of youth; and not now to the
rich alone is your gospel of love and wisdom
preached, but to the poor also, who gaze at you
from their windows across the street and bless
you with their richest blessings.
The manager herself answered Leah's timid
ring at the door-bell. She had been resting on
her couch but rose to greet the newcomer with
a welcoming kiss. After speaking a few encouraging
words to the timid girl she lead her
through the still unfinished rooms to choose the
one she wished. Leah chose the one upper
story room because it was more quiet than the
rest. Then she was introduced to the sixteen
other girls who were present, after which came
the furnishing of the room. First a bed was
put up and a study table taken from the room
below. The crowning fun was making a washstand
from a dry goods box. Last of all curtains
were hung to serve as wardrobes, and the room
was finished.
Two of the girls had been introduced as
seniors. One of these volunteered to take the
newcomer through the College and introduce
her to some of the teachers. As Leah stepped
through the door into the beautiful building
that had but so recently been opened to her and
such as she was,. her heart swelled with gratitude
to the great God and his servant, the
