52 CHAPTERS FROM LIFE:
for she had heard it spoken of sneeringly. The
church was a long way off, through dark and
lonely streets and across a railroad. It was always
late before the work was done and the
children put to bed. Would the mistress let
her go?
" Yes," she said when Nan asked the question,
"You may go when everything is finished."
Nan worked that evening as she had seldom
worked before. "She dragged her weary feet
back and forth over the clean scoured kitchen
until in places it was really slippery. Wonder
of wonders! the baby went quickly and quietly
to sleep and Nan was free. Alone she trod the
dark streets and crossed the dreaded track and
stood at last at the church door.
How timid Nan felt now. It had been long,
long since her feet had touched the threshold of
a church before. And here she stood alone, her
dress was old, her shoes were worn, over her
head was thrown a faded scarf. In there the
people looked so neat; dare she go among them
in her queer attire? But as she stood there
hesitating and fearful one of the deacons spied
her and invited her in. She followed him as he
took her up the crowded aisle and gave her a
seat between two godly, kindly sisters.
Nan listened to songs and prayers and sermon
as only those can listen who seldom hear the
word of God. And,- somehow, the minister
made it so plain that night;"The
weary, sin-sick, longing soul;
The pitying, saving, satii .g Savior.
