by every human soul, nothing of the power of
the Great God that sways the events of every
life according to His own will.
And the girl labored with all her soul. She
drank deep and eagerly of the waters of worldly
wisdom. The teachers looked on and said,
'"She is a marvel!" The pupils whispered
among themselves, " She will bear away all the
honors." Louise heard the whispers and drank
with the cup of knowledge the cup of honor and
homage; and her heart swelled yet again with
pride, and her brain reeled with exultation,
and she pressed her books to her heart and repeated,
"Genius is within me; do not all see
it? I will bring it out. Will do it!"
II.
The hour had come,-the last hour, the hour
when hope must die, when ambition must be
laid aside. How tenderly Louise touched her
beloved books packed now in her book strap, to
be opened perhaps never again. Poor child,
and she so young in years and yet so old in
thought. It was all over,-all the happiness of
life; the future held nothing in store for her
but humble, unceasing toil; the past but
mocked her with its long, long list of other hearts
that had been crushed like hers just as they
touched the border of fame and usefulness. She
