even these were hard to secure. The question,
"How many years' experience have you had? "
signaled her failure; for upon her reply, " This
is my first attempt at teaching," she was dismissed
with the prompt assertion that they
" couldn't think about employing a teacher that
had to be broke."
At last, after repeated disappointments, Leah
secured a little school. She had to take it at
ten dollars less than the former teacher, and
that was scarcely living wages. It is true the
former teacher had been inexperienced, too, and
hadn't given a particle of satisfaction, but it was
a man. The school was several miles from town,
and further from a railroad; the house was old
and let in rain and cold; her boarding accommodations
were poor in the extreme; the
children were vastly ignorant and some of them
hard to control; but Leah, glad of any opportunity
to make a beginning, entered upon her
work bravely and with a determination to
succeed.
It was extremely difficult for Leah to mingle
with strangers. Her pride and reserve and
natural quietude had caused her to seek a few
friends and cling to them alone. But now she
visited the people, and everywhere she went
she strove to carry an influence for good. There
was no church in the community, no Sunday
School, no prayer-meeting, no improvement
societies, no books, no music. All the young
folks cared for were dances and frolics: all the
old folks cared for was to eat, dress, gossip, and
