HISTORY OF THE CLUB
pT HE DALLAS ARCHITECTURAL CLUB, like most organizations of its kind, was
born of necessity. In general, the fast-growing Southwest, of which Dallas may
fairly claim to be representative, had reached a stage in its architectural pretensions,
its artistic growth and development, that a concerted movement among its younger
men to club together for the advancement of their mutual interests was inevitable and
timely. On June 21st, 1920, therefore, the Dallas Architectural Club,, uprising
eighteen charter members, came into being. Constitution and By-Laws took shape
and form and Dallas became a new and additional dot on the architectural map
amongst its sister cities of the country.
It was decided to make this organization fundamentally a draftsmen's dub, resting
the voting power and management in their hands, but not to limit the membership
nor the scope of its activities to the interests of draftsmen alone. It was organized
to include in its ranks, as well, men of the allied trades and also architects who might
be interested in the objects as set forth by the Club. Divisions of membership were
therefore provided-the Active, or managing members, being draftsmen employed in
the architectural, structural or mechanical crafts; Associate members were those engaged
or associated in the allied arts or trades; Patron members included practicing
or retired architects of recognized ability; Honorary members consisted of those of
acknowledged eminence in some branch of architecture, or the sciences related thereto
-those who had rendered some service to the profession.
The fundamental objects or purposes of the club were for the advancement of architecture
and its allied arts, for the promotion of social intercourse among those so
interested, and for the promulgation of such arts or sciences by readings, lectures,
discussions, competitions, exhibitions, etc., as occasion might warrant. Foremost in
forwarding these avowed purposes is the Atelier which has developed much latent
talent in the Club, as is evidenced by the excellent awards received in the course of
study given by the Beaux-Arts Institute of Design. The social, the educational and
the entertainment features have been well presented and have proved to be the stabilizing
force or backbone of the Club's normal activities. The Entertainment Committee
has had the task of keeping all classes of its membership interested and perhaps
some appraisal of the success of their efforts may be gained by the fact that the present
membership of 120 exactly doubles that of a year ago. Among the "star events" have
been perpetrated minstrel shows, burlesque extravaganzas, banquets, baseball, picnics,
