Denton center
offers free food for
those in need
Jason Yang
Senior Staff Writer
Diana Garrison lives a peaceful
life. She recently visited her newborn
niece in Ohio. She attends church
every Sunday. And every weekday
from noon to 5 p.m., she's feeding
hungry locals at Shepherd's Hand.
'We don't ask where you are from,"
Garrison said. "If you are hungry or
need food to feed your family for the
day we will provide the food."
Located on Fort Worth Drive,
Shepherd's Hand doesn't turn anyone
away. Whether homeless or jobless,
Garrison offers enough food to last a
person or household through the day.
Unlike other local community
food centers, Shepherd's Hand
offers food every weekday instead
of selected days. The store gives out
free bread, vegetables, meat and fruit
according to the number of people in
the family and the number of appli-
ances. Sometimes Pizza Hut even
donates pizza.
"We don't buy any food," Garrison
said. "Everything we receive is
through donations from local people
and restaurants, such as Panera Bread
and Olive Garden, and occasional
food drives."
Garrison started Shepherd's Hand
in October 2008. Coming from a back-
ground where she volunteered at
Habitat for Humanity and worked
as a cashier and manager, she was
unsure of what to expect when she
first opened the center.
But after the first month,
Shepherd's Hand served more than
4,500 people, so Garrison kept going.
Now, the center serves an average
of 70 people a day and is open at
least 20 days a month. The center
serves a minimum of 5,000 people
each month, and more than 7,000 on
some months.
"This is the most enjoyable thing
I've ever done," Garrison said.
Laurie Richardson recently had a
liver transplant and doesn't have a
job. Although she has been coming
for only the past couple of weeks, she
pointed out the amount of relief the
center provides for her family.
"Every time we come here, they
always give us enough food to fill
up the fridge," said Zack Richardson,
Laurie Richardson's son.
Lisa Olvera has been volunteering
since March, and she said it always
warms her heart when she sees the
smile from the people in need.
"That feeling of helping others
never gets old," Olvera said. "It
always touches my heart."
