Old Timer Announces
For District Clerk.
Walter Durham, of Forest, is
the latest to enter the political
arena of the Democratic nomin-
ating primary, aspiring to the of-
' fice of District Clerk.
Most-of you know Mr. Durham
and if you don't you have not
been here very long, for lie has
been here about all the time, or
over a quarter of a century, hav-
ing come to Cherokee county at
a tender age, his parents being
among the early pioneers.
The best way to judge a man is
to be governed by what those
who have known him longest and
best think of him and right there
is where Walter Durham is will-
ing to stake his chances fgr public
favor.
He is a fanner and taxpayer,
has never sought a political office
before, is competent to fill the
position, and will appreciate any
consideration shown him by the
electorate.
Some Smallpox With
iOts Of Vaccinating.
Y
Rusk isffiperiencinga smallpox
scare, and it is not wholly with-
out provocation, as we nave at
least Lhree well defined cases in
town. The one at the jail, men-
tion of which we made last week,
Len Richards, who developed a
case a few days ago, and the son
of Mrs, Ethel Mann ng.
All three cases have been quar-
antined and completely isolated,
and there should be no danger of
an epidemic.
As a very proper precaution it
was decided to vaccinate all the
pupils attending public school,
and over two hundred were given
the preventive treatment Mon-
day, when a halt was called until
more vaccine was procured.
The disease so far as developed,
is proving to be in mild form, but
it might become worse and every
possible precautionary measure
should be trken.

,Elliott-Clark No
One Abandoned.
About the saddest event that
has occured in the development
of the Carey Lake field is the
abandonment of Elliott Clark No
1 this week This was the dis-
covery well which came in last
March with all the promise in
the world of a continuoug source
of supply of ten thousand barrels
of oil a day, and the opening up
of an oil field that would com-
pare favorably with, or perhaps
surpass, the big fields of their
sections.
No new location has been an-
nounced for the rig and derrick
at Elliott Clark No 1, and it is
seated there may not be. With
the abandonment of this well, all
development activities on this
side of the Neches river come to
a halt, Two wells across the
river are being continued with
but faint hope of success. - Jack-
sonville Progress.
As E. R Gregg, wife and chil
dren were en route on a visit to
Nacagdoches, last Sunday even-
ing, and while about four miles
this side of that city, they met
with rather a peculiar experien e.
Without warning or anyone in
sight and while passing through
a deep cut, they were surprised
by a crash of glass and a stone as
big as a hen's egg came through
the car door.
They never knew who hurled
the missle, but suppose it muse
have been thrown by a boy con-
cealed behind a tiee, who made
*,quick get away.
Mrs Gregg received a slight
laceration on her forehead, from
flying glass, and Mr. Gre^g sus
tained a bruise on the wrist, but
nothing serious
Eldredge said he wouldn't have
cared so much, but the glass had
been cracked for some time be
lore and he had just paid out $8
to have it replaced.

if they attempt to run their cars
without the license tag attached.
The State Highway Depart-
ment has the enforcement of this
automobile law directly under
its charge, and the local officers
have no discretion in the premis-
es, but will be compelled to make
arrests whenever they know of a
violation.
Another thing. Some people
seem to think that they can pay
their city and school taxes' when
they get ready, and some never
get ready. This is wrong. The
obligation to pay these municipal
taxes is just as essential and even
more sacred than those of county
and state.
The tax levies for the support
of these municipalities are based
on the property valuations shown
by the tax rolls, and made as low
as [.possible, on the assumption
that all will be paid when due
Therefore, when there is a de-
linquency there is a correspond-
ing deficiency in the funds for the
operation of our schools and city
affairs. Its just a plain, business
proposition that should appeal to
every taxpayer.
