LESSONS FROM
AN ANT TOWN-
0
(By an Ant Observer)
One day, Thanksgiving to be
exact, I was passing along a dim
road through an old pine field
when my attention was attracted
to an "ant town" in this quiet
place. I had seen "an town" be-
fore and knew about them, but
I stopped to interview the in-
habitants of this busy little city
and to note how they were get-
ting along. The fresh dirt that
was piled up around their busi-
ness places indicated that a con-
siderable improvement had re-
cently taken place, probably in
anticipation of the winter soon
to come. The city council had
possibly decided that this should
be done, for some wise old ant
had prophesied that it. was going
to be a hard winter.
It was a busy town to a pass-
ing visitor, and everything was
in harmony. Everybody

Appropriateness should be the
governing influence in making
selections of presents. We once
knew a lady who had a keen con-
ception along this line. On the
occasion of the fifteenth anni-
versary of their marriage she
made her husband a present of
a volume of Luther Benson's
"Fifteen Years In Hell."

What has become of the old

so much excitement and thrills
to the youth of the land? The
devil we still have with us, but
Old Punch and his uncontroll-
able and unreasonable wife
seem to have left the country
with the sword swallower.

speak of it, I imagine that
is real enjoyment among these
little creatures of thrift deep
down in their cellers tilled with
their tender crisp food on a win-
ter day when the earth is cover-
ed with a sheet of ice and snow
than when they could go out and
feed on bushes that waved with
an abundance of plenty. In
their little homes in the earth,
secure in peace, blessed with
a food supply "when no man
works" and living in the enjoy-
ment of honest toil these little
industrial workers are an exam
pie of thrift and economy which
the world would do well to take
notice.
Yet the people are unlike the
ants in this respect. With tie d
and forest burdened with thiir
fruitful yield, the open meadow
waving with its golden grain,
the fruit tree bending with its
luscious fruit, yet no thought of
a winterd y, no dream of when
it will all be gone. They do not
know the value of a eeller as w 11
as an ant, and saving is almost a
str .nirer t > their economy. Sup-
pose the ants, like the p ople.
