Buy Way To Texas
League Pennant Again
DALLAS, Tex., Jan. 14 (UP)
-R. VV. Burnett, millionaire oil-
I man owner of the Dallas Eagles,
figured today that he was lucky
to sign Charlie Grimm to skip-
per his Texas League club
even at S30.000 a season.
Grimm wasn't feeling any
pain, either. The former man-
ager of ihe Chicago Cubs formal-
ly signed a three-year pact yes-
terday for the S30.000 post, and
with r.o strings attached.
Burnett set out last season
to buy his way to the Texas
League pennant, but he ended
up with a pack of middle-aged
performers who wilted in the
stretch.
Grimm will have a double job
in Dallas. He'll be field man-
ager arid also will choose pro-
ducts of a minor league farm
system being developed through
the Burnet! millions.
ItuM-li.ili Prospects
The Sweetwater Swatters, this
town's professional baseball out-
fit. will be right up there in the
running for first place In the
Longhorn League this season
if President Cy I'ausett and
Business Manager Frank Meeks
have anything to ay aixnit it.
And since they will have their
hay-so, look out Big Spring, Mid-
laud .mil Vernon. The other
three clubs shouldn't be any
bother.
* * *
A Ixiul eight players from last
year's Swatter club will prob-
ably return this season.
They include — l.loyil An-
gella, I.vie Boyd, Art Cuitti, Bob
I )ahri, Dick MordJdo. Jesse
Priest, Larry Roach and Bob
Spence,
Angella turned out to l e a darn
good pitcher ia.st year and he
should be of considerable help
to the team this season. Boyd
was released at the first of the
season: he went home and won
nine straight games in a tough
semi-pro league. Lyle now be-
lieves he has the stuff needed to
win in the Longhorn League
Cuitti, third baseman last year,
will probably go to the outfield.
Dahn may lie converted into a
pitcher since he has one of the
best throwing arms in the lea-
gue. Great things are expected of
Mordido, who came nigh of
throwing two or three no-hitters
in 10-1!).
Priest will benefit the Swat-
ter relief pitching corps with
his side-arm delivery. Roach
may go to third base and of
course southpaw Spence is the
Swatter pride, having won 17
games in 'JO.

Scout Reports
I'ausett says that the Swatter
prospects at present are better
than those of his Albuquerque
Dukes.
Dr. K. ('. Williams, noted
scout and baseball school o|x?r-
ator at Greesbriar. Ark., is sign-
ing players for the Sweetwater
rltlb.
Dr. Williams has trained such
players as Johnny Sain and
George Kell He scouted for
Burger in 1010.
Baseball spring training will
begin in exactly two months
from today—on March 15.

(lut-tW-Town
At the Longhorn baseball
meeting last Sunday, President
Hal Saylcs was asking all the
club owners for any particular
dates they wanted to be out of
town due to rodeos, celebrations,
etc.
When it came to Fausett's
time, he stood and said: "If I
don't field a better club than 1
diil last year. I'll want' to stay
out of town."

Until Friday it appeared that
I Baugh would accept the post and

Baugh explained that he reach-

Marshall.
"If the Redskins had had
good seasons in the last couple
of years, I might have gone to
Baylor," Baugh said. "But since
Mr Marshall thinks I'll be a

I'll stay with the Redskins.

Walker Is Given
Conduct Award
BOSTON, Jan. M (UP)
Doak Walker, all-America half- I
back from Southern Methodist |
University, received the fourth ;
annual Nils (Swede) Nelson j
award for outstanding sports- j
manship during the 1949 season
Saturday night.
Walker's conduct in last fall's
SMU-Rice game is officially
credited with winning him the
award given by the Gridiron
Club of Boston.
Tackled by Rice center Gerald
Weatherly, Walker was driver,
over the sidelines and knocked
unconscious when he hit a wheel-
| chair. When he regained con-
| sciousness he congratulated
i Weatherly on a good play.
Other factors also were Iist-
i ed in Walker's favor. One was
i the letter he wrote to Collier's
i magazine, asking that the pub-
lication not consider him for its
All-America team because he
had beer out of action for sov- j
oral games with injuries.
