John Rati iff,
former vice president of finance
senior administration, staff and student
services have been implemented dur-
ing the summer. These changes be-
gan taking place last spring with the
resignation of vice president of finance
John Ratliff. Also, over the summer
new positions such as two associate
provost positions and a facilities co-
ordinator position were created. The
athletic department and student life
have undergone some restructuring,
too. .
Ratliff s resignation was announced last spring, according to President Jake Schrum.
"The decision to leave has been under discussion for almost four years, and it really kind of started
when Jake first came here. Within a month after Jake was here, we had a discussion about the organization
of the university, and he asked my advice. He was very open to ideas," said Ratliff.
According to Ratliff, he suggested to Schrum not to be bound by the organization headed by the
previous president, Jerry Baucham.
"The point I had with Jake was he needed to organize in a way that would make him successful. He
needed the right people he could work with, that reflect his work ethic, vhis standards and his values," said
Ratliff.
"The organizational change kind of started when Mark Wacisko, former provost, left. Jake wanted to
bring in a provost to head up not only the academic side, but also the operating side," said Ratliff.
Ratliff said the decision to leave was a mutual one between him and Schrum. He said his effective-
ness in establishing a balanced budget was in the past, and he wanted to move in different directions and
use his talents elsewhere because they were not needed for the new structure and Schrum wanted to get in
someone new.
Schrum said Ratliff's resignation prompted Schrum to make changes.
"I didn't start to think about how 1 could restructure the administration until Mr. Ratliff decided to
pursue other interests. I began thinking about different combinations that would work for the university,"
said Schrum. ——

could I best serve my

human resources, " said

vice president and dean of students.
human resource functions were
formerly under the vice president of finance
John Ratliff. Ratliff left the university in May
to pursue other interests. However, according
to Pohl, the functions of the finance office
were being discussed as early as March.
Schrum approached Pohl in March to discuss the reorganization plan
and the need for an expanded human resources office to service the large
number of employees.
"He complimented my management skills and asked me to set up the
new bffice and head it because of my abilities and length of employment at
Wesleyan, 24 years. I was quite honored to do it," said Pohl.
The new self-contained human resources office is designed to deal
specifically with human resource matters. It will coordinate employee
benefits, provide training, seminars and workshops, as well as speciallized
services such as financial planning, Pohl said.
"My number one goal is to set up systems of procedures so our employ-,
ees get the, services they need in a timely manner," said Pohl.
She went on to say that although these services were offered under
the previous organization, it was difficult for the finance office to
coordinate the level of services which the office can now provide.
"The small staff of the finance office was not equipped for the
amount of paperwork involved in full-scale human resource services.
The new set-up is designed to benefit the employee from the beginning
to the end of their career at Wesleyan," said Pohl..
With the reorganization, Pohl is no longer in vice president;
however, Pohl views her change as a lateral move.
"I was excited and grateful about the opportunity the president
offered me," Pohl said.

With the bulk of changes being

services, Graham asks for students to
be patient for the implementation of
new services.

Workers continue to transform
the campus center's old lounge into
the Career Services and Testing Cen-
ter. which will be under Dr. James
Cannici, formerly the director of coun-
seling and testing.
They have divided the room into
four main areas, three of which will
become offices, said Cannici's secre-
tary Loretta Henrtard.
Hennard, who used to work for
President Jake Schrum, said her new
job will let her work more with stu-
dents in a career development capac-
ity, as she has done in the past.
Hennard said she thinks students
will be thrilled at the services the Cen-
ter will have to offer.
