Happy Cal is a gonitis in his lino and
his experience has been so wide ami va-
ried that he is enabled to bring forward
something new at each entertainment.
With his present company Wagner has
sturtod out In a now hue ami from the
reception his new Ideas are meeting
with it is evident that lie has struck a
lead and is going to make it p:.n. To
an v one who attends the ordinary min
strel entertainment the lack of
any plot in introducing the charac-
ters on the stage is vory evident and de-
tracts always from the ell'net. in thin
respect it is especially that Wagner's in-
dependence has led liim to a new meth-
od. Instead of the tirciomo tlrst part in
which every tiling is tixed and set just
like every other show he has substi-
tuted a negro holiday celebration to
which every one who can (lance sing or
play are invited and tho entertainment
then follows as a matter of course. In-
stead of the rows of chairs in line the
negroes recline in natural posi
tions in a wood or are sealed
on the trunks of trooa. Of the
various excellences of the entertain
ment iininv are deserving of special at-
tention. The names of Turner Gaston
linker .lames ami Lew laonediet are
enough to suggest to anyone who has
ever heard of minstrels tho quality of
the entertainment. Tho Quaker City

Splendid Stage Accompantairnts of Mary
Audron' "Ramee and Juliut" In Lon-
don. London Nov. 1. It is safe to assort
that never even In these days of theatri-
cal splendor and sccnio wealth has a
play boon produced upon which greater
cure grentor talent greater munificence
have been lavished than Ui-on the re-
vival of "Ho 1110 and Juliet" in which
Mary Anderson appears to-night at the
Lyceum for tlio tirst time in Fng-
laml. No efTort no expense has been
spared to give a perfect lintsli to the set-
ting of the play. The artists w ho have

Hi lice. Ol these the tirst-named has ex-
ecuted his work iu the city itself the
squares and streets of w hich he has had
to reproduce. For magnificence and
archeological correctness it Is doubtful
whether such a mise-en-scoiie has before
been seen upon any stage. Tho Verona
represented is tho Verona of l.'ibu.
This it seems is tho date affixed by
the Veronese themselves to Hie tragic
isle wiiitdi still lingers its an his-
torical tradition of the city it has been
tlio custom here to ascribe the evonts of
thn play to l.V.tO.a year earlier or .liter. Tho
custom is now 'departed from and the
architecture tlio tlresi-es anil the uni-
forms adopted are of the earlier cen-
tury. Juliet's chamber is a fiiithlnl re-
production of the apartment which
Carpaccio's old plate now presorvetl in
the llritisli museum represents.
Tho furniture the draperies
and all accessories have been
taken as models and minutely
imitated. Upon the costumes the same
detailed attention has been bestowed
and the same tlcsi-e for correctness
evinced. Kuropo has been ransacked
for supplies of the line old brocaded ami
metal-tissued cloths in which our ances-
tors delighted. Juliet's dresses are uu-
precedented'y rich and many of liieiu
lovely iu the extreme. From tirst to
last seven changes are necessitated by
the action of the drama.
Two important innovations are intro-
duced into tlio acting of the play -tine
the marriage scene tlio other Hie funeral
ceremony. It has been usual to dis-
pense with an hymeneal allar and leave
the linking of the connubial hum! to the
fancy and imagination of tlio M oo-
tid or.
